Browne fit and firing after 2012 heartbreakWednesday, April 10, 2013 - 4:00 PM - by Chris Pike

CLAREMONT captain Andrew Browne is up and firing early in the 2013 season after he frustratingly missed the second of the Tigers' back-to-back premierships last year, but he was never going to bow out of WAFL football on that note.

Browne was one of the key performers in Claremont's drought breaking premiership in 2011, but managed just five league games in 2012 before re-injuring his hamstring in the second semi-final and then missed the grand final win over East Fremantle.

He had just taken over as captain from the retired Clancy Rudeforth and his character shone through when despite his individual injury troubles, he was an outstanding leader as much as he could be around the club as the Tigers went on to claim a second successive premiership.

The 28-year-old who has now played 100 league games for Claremont and five in the Foxtel Cup since making his league debut in 2002, is now happy with the way his 2013 campaign has started after the troubles of last year.

"Obviously it was a disappointing way for me to finish off last year missing the grand final so I was really keen to get myself in the best shape I could to have the best opportunity to have a good year. Touchwood I haven’t had too many issues so far and hopefully I get a fair bit of footy out of myself this year," Browne said.

"I had a pretty average year the whole way through with injuries so it wasn’t like I just got to the last hurdle and stumbled. It was tough especially being captain watching from the sidelines and not being able to have the impact that you want to, but I have had a good pre-season and am out there now. I'm hoping to stay there."

Having been forced to miss the grand final after leading the team into the second semi-final win over Swan Districts last season, Browne never wanted to end his career on that note and that saw him set himself for a massive pre-season, and it's paying off already early in 2013 across half-back.

"When I missed the grand final I knew that I didn’t want to finish on that note. There was probably a chance that it would have been my last year had it not ended that way, but it's hard to walk away from a team that's always a chance to really have an impact late in the year," Browne said.

"We probably had four or five guys who were 50-50 about retiring, but it's hard to walk away from a premiership team. We are pretty hungry to give ourselves a good chance of having an impact late in the year again, and we are off to a good start.

"I don’t really look at it as a farewell or a fairytale or anything like that, but once you get the taste of that ultimate success you get hungrier for more. When you train from November and you give your heart and soul to the footy club, you really want something tangible at the end of the year to reflect those efforts. That's our ultimate goal and we just have to keep winning to give ourselves a chance."

Browne has had an outstanding start to this season having starred with a best on ground performance with 31 possessions in Round 1 against South Fremantle, and then two more good outings in wins over Swan Districts and East Perth since.

He is enjoying the mix in the defensive unit alongside James Thomson, David Crawford, Aaron Holt, Keifer Yu and even Alex Silvagni and Trinity Handley at times.

Browne feels comfortable leading the team from the half-back flank and has no doubt his leadership has been influenced by those he followed at Claremont – Jaxon Crabb, Anthony Jones and Rudeforth.

"I'm pretty comfortable back there and I've been in the back-line for a couple of years now. We've got a pretty experienced group back there with Thompson, Crawford and Handley and Silvagni at times. We like to think that we are a pretty strong back-line and I've just been doing my bit for the team," he said.

"I've learnt from some good players and our last few captains at Claremont have been great. I've had some really good people to learn off with my leadership and I've just tried to do a similar sort of job with those guys, and I've got a pretty easy group of guys below me to keep in check.

"They are hard workers and there's a fair bit of experience there as well so I get a fair bit of help in the leadership stakes."

Claremont is now preparing for its second game at Leederville's Medibank Stadium in six days.

The Tigers beat East Perth by 54 points there last Saturday and now will take on Subiaco on Friday night with Browne looking forward to seeing what his coach Marc Webb has up his sleeve against his premiership teammate from Subiaco, and assistant at Claremont last year, Jarrad Schofield.

"We played them a few weeks ago in the pre-season and they were a pretty impressive side. They've obviously had a few changes over the pre-season so we expect nothing less than a really hard fought game of footy," Browne said.

"We will have a bit of a lighter week and have a look at how they have performed over the last couple of weeks, and we will be taking the game very seriously.

"I know that Webby always enjoys coaching against his old side and no doubt Schoey will be the same so that's an interesting little side plot, but for the players once we are out there it's just a game of footy and we will do our best to earn the points."
