In a display of unity and cultural celebration, the Pickering Brook Football Club and the Mazenod Junior Football Club have joined forces to celebrate their NAIDOC round celebrations last weekend.
The coming together of the Pickering Brook Football Club from the Hills Football Association, and the Mazenod Junior Football Club from Metro Central’s Swans Junior District, holds immense importance for both clubs and their respective communities.
For these football clubs, celebrating NAIDOC Round is an opportunity to honour and pay respect to the traditional custodians of the land on which they play and gather.
During the NAIDOC Round celebrations, both clubs were involved with activities that not only provide a deeper understanding of Indigenous customs and traditions but also serve as a means of preserving and passing down these valuable cultural practices to future generations.
Pickering Brook Football Club President, Rowan Arnott said the club hopes to make this an annual event.
“It was great to see the local community get behind and support this day," Arnott said.
"The Mazenod Junior Football club jumpers added to the day and the way their teams played was in the true spirit of football.
“We were proud to launch our two new Indigenous jumpers that were created by Andrew ‘Bushy’ Beck and Brad Jetta and want to thank Warrikal for sponsoring the day.”
Mazenod Junior Football Club President, Michael Ferritto said: “It was fantastic to be able to join in with Pickering Brook to celebrate NAIDOC round by wearing our indigenous jumpers designed by our indigenous students that our players get to wear every week with pride.
"Mazenod Junior Football Club were grateful of the funding provided by the Metro Central Regional Development Council to assist with the purchase of the jumpers.
West Australian Football Commission’s Head of Club Development and Volunteers, Corey Ranger congratulated Pickering Brook' and Mazenod' collaboration for this initiative.
“This partnership between the Pickering Brook Football Club and the Mazenod Junior Football Club to celebrate NAIDOC Round exemplifies the true spirit of community engagement and inclusivity,” Ranger said
“Together, they are paving the way for a more inclusive and respectful sporting community.”
The partnership between both clubs commenced in 2022 and contributes to the overall growth and success of both clubs as well as promoting football in the Hills of Perth.
