Harrison Describes “Life Changing” Moment for State Country TeamWednesday, July 26, 2023 - 11:06 AM

New Holland Country Women State team coach Gemma Harrison has left no doubt about her team’s intentions ahead of Sunday’s exhibition match against the State 18’s Women’s side at Optus Stadium.

Harrison has promised a committed approach from the group which represents Country WA.

“Put simply, our women are there to win,” Harrison said.

“Country people are often viewed as relaxed and easy going, but these women are incredibly determined to put on a show and get the victory.”

It’s the first time the State Country Women will play the State 18’s side, with the match being used as a preparation for the 2023 AFL National Championships – U18 Girls.

“This will be the third match for the State Women’s Country team and since the inception we’ve played the PFL State team twice,” she said.

“The State game provides an avenue for talented country players to form invaluable links with other country players.

“While there is a rivalry between clubs and the various Leagues our women have the ability to form meaningful relationships and work as a high functioning team over a short period of time.

“It’s now viewed as the pinnacle for women’s country footy, and as such, our players are grateful, excited and proud to represent country regions of WA.”

The opportunity to play at the home of football in this state will also stir the emotions.

“Ask any footy tragic and they’ll tell you walking on Optus Stadium is a memorable experience.

“To play there, represent the regions and play before an AFL match is life changing and something we’ll treasure for years to come.

“We’re also delighted that the game will be live streamed so that our supporters who can’t make it to Perth can still watch and cheer us on,” she said.

The State Country Women’s squad is dominated by the SWFL, which has 9 representatives.

“The SWFL is an incredibly strong and successful league, and the standard of games is amazing to watch.

“Interestingly, there are about half a dozen women who were deemed ineligible because they regularly play WAFLW.”

This may be a one-off match, but it’s a glimpse of the growth of the game for women in country areas.

“Participation rates continue to grow which is incredible pleasing.

“We’re also now seeing the results of females who have moved through from Auskick and now have a visible pathway to continue their football journey.

For Harrison, the chance to coach at this level again is one she doesn’t take for granted after devoting years to the sport.

“I started the Goldfields Female Football League, coached the Goldfields Rep side for many years, launched and coached youth talent academies, and have been a mentor to a number of girls in Kalgoorlie," she said.

“I was also Assistant Coach for the State Country team in 2021 and Head Coach last year.

“For me, this game is the culmination of several years of work.

“I’m truly honoured and excited to lead this group, but also humbled to be working alongside a talented and committed group of players and coaching staff.”

The match begins at 11am on Sunday and will be a curtain raiser before the West Coast Eagles host North Melbourne.
