SUBIACO was able to well and truly keep its WAFLW finals hopes alive with a dominant win against Peel Thunder on Saturday while Claremont then locked away the minor premiership by snapping Swan Districts' winning run on Sunday.
There were just the two matches in Round 14 of the WAFLW on the back of the two derbies last weekend which saw West Perth defeat East Perth, and East Fremantle beat South Fremantle.
Those four teams then all had the bye this weekend with a game each on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
Round 14 in the WAFLW got underway on Saturday at Leederville Oval and Subiaco dominated Peel Thunder to win 5.11 (41) to 0.0 (0) with the result keeping the Lions just half a game outside of fourth position on the ladder with two rounds remaining.
The two hottest teams in the WAFLW then did battle on Sunday at Revo Fitness Stadium and it was Claremont remaining undefeated in 2023 by beating Swan Districts 5.7 (37) to 2.4 (16).
The win guarantees the Tigers of finishing in top spot at the end of the home and away season while Swans' seven-game winning streak comes to an end and they are only just hanging on to fourth place as a result.
Round 14 in the Youth Girls Rogers Cup competition began on Saturday with two matches starting with Subiaco defeating Peel Thunder 6.1 (37) to 3.9 (27) at Leederville Oval. Sunni-Quay Peters kicked two goals for the Lions. The Thunder's goals came from Nakia Jilley, Arnya Pickston and Mia Van Kleef.
West Perth also prevailed 9.12 (66) to 2.1 (13) against South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval. Mia Russo and Isabella Hill kicked two goals apiece for West Perth. South Fremantle's goals came from Poppy James and Alira Fotu.
The other two matches took place on Sunday with Claremont beating Swan Districts 8.3 (51) to 4.4 (28) at Revo Fitness Stadium. Esther Cooney kicked three goals for the Tigers and India Bonadeo two. Tannah Lee kicked all four goals in the game for the Swans.
East Perth also defeated Perth 14.13 (97) to 0.1 (1) at Leederville Oval on Sunday. Hannah Challender kicked four goals for the Royals, Makayla Rogers three, Jorja Schell two and Ruby Burgess two.
WAFLW PREMIERSHIP SEASON – ROUND 14
SUBIACO 5.11 (41) defeated PEEL THUNDER 0.0 (0)
Subiaco produced a dominant performance holding Peel Thunder scoreless the entire afternoon on the way to a 41-point win to keep their finals hopes alive.
Subiaco played host to Peel at Leederville Oval on Saturday afternoon with both teams coming off the bye over the WA Day long weekend.
The Lions needed the win to stay in finals contention and the Thunder were looking to avoid a ninth consecutive loss, but it was the home team dominating from the outset.
Subiaco would end up winning 5.11 (41) to 0.0 (0) to improve to six wins, five losses and a draw on the season to be now just half a game out of fifth position with two games remaining which sees them play South Fremantle and West Perth.
Meg Brown delivered a best on ground performance for Subiaco with her afternoon consisting of 27 possessions, six inside 50s, five marks, five tackles and two goals.
Captain Tarni Golisano also racked up 27 possessions for the Lions to go with eight tackles and five entries inside the forward 50.
Olivia Crane gathered 21 touches as well as laying 10 tackles with Eva Popovsky ending up with 20 disposals, Tiah Toth 19, Grace Hahnel 17 and Lauren Bilaloski 15 while Jess Ritchie had 11 possessions and 21 hit outs in the ruck.
It was a tough afternoon for Peel who went scoreless for the entire game but Evie Cowcher and Ebony Dowson fought valiantly at the defensive end.
Cowcher finished the game with 26 possessions, 12 marks and four tackles while Dowson ended up with 25 touches, five marks and three tackles.
Krystal Carter also collected 15 touches for the Thunder along with seven marks and five tackles.
It took only five minutes into the game for Subiaco to kick the first goal which came courtesy of Hanna Dethlefsen.
That would be the only goal of the first quarter with the Lions leading by eight points at quarter-time. The home team would kick the only goal of the second quarter as well thanks to Eva Popovsky to go into the half-time interval on top by 16 points.
It was more of the same in the second half with Subiaco able to stop Peel from scoring at all the entire game.
The Lions added another goal in the third quarter from Meg Brown, and then two more in the final term courtesy of Brown and Kate Pocsidio to end up winning by 41 points and to remain right in finals contention with two weeks remaining.
CLAREMONT 5.7 (37) defeated SWAN DISTRICTS 2.4 (16)
The two hottest teams in the WAFLW locked horns on Sunday afternoon at Revo Fitness Stadium and it was Claremont who locked away the minor premiership beating Swan Districts by 21 points.
Claremont came into Sunday's Round 14 match up still yet to lose a match on the back of winning last year's WAFLW premiership while Swan Districts took them on having won their past seven matches as well.
That set the stage for a fascinating match up in the third last round of the WAFLW season, and it was Claremont who proved too strong to end up winning 5.7 (37) to 2.4 (16).
The victory sees Claremont now sit on 11 wins and a draw for the season and with just two rounds to go, the Tigers can't be unseated from top spot as the minor premiers for 2023.
Swan Districts saw its seven-game winning streak coming to an end but the black-and-whites do remain in fourth position with a 7-5 record with games now to finish against East Fremantle and South Fremantle.
Adele Arnup proved to be the best forward in the game and the only player to kick multiple goals from either team. She finished with three goals from her four kicks for the game for Claremont.
Kate Orme had a tremendous performance again for Claremont racking up 25 possessions while Jayme Harken finished with 23 touches, Sarah Garstone 22, Jacinta Valentini 18 and Sarah Viney 18 to go with nine tackles.
Claire Ortlepp also ended up with 17 disposals and seven tackles.
Swan Districts' goals were kicked by Kayley King and Ruby Mahony. King also finished with 15 possessions and two tackles, and Mahony 13 disposals and 10 tackles.
Jasmine Ware had a terrific afternoon for Swan Districts finishing with 20 possessions, six marks and two tackles.
Eliza Gelmi also gathered 16 touches and six tackles for Swans while Naomi Baker had 15 disposals, Daisy Rigby 12, Isabella Edgley 12 and Indiana West 11 to go with eight tackles.
Megan Carron also had 10 touches and 14 hit outs in the ruck.
The two hottest teams in the WAFLW locked horns at Revo Fitness Stadium on Sunday and it took 11 minutes for the first goal to be kicked which went the way of the Tigers thanks to Adele Arnup.
Arnup then added a second goal for the Tigers before quarter-time which helped her team to the 12-point lead after the opening term.
Swan Districts got on the board to open the second quarter with a goal to Ruby Mahony but Claremont responded almost immediately courtesy of Bec Anderson.
However, Swans did kick a second goal of the quarter thanks to Kayley King and that cut the margin to just eight points going into the half-time break.
The game was still right up for grabs coming into the second half but it took less than two minutes for the Tigers to push their lead out further when Arnup kicked her third goal of the contest.
That would prove the only goal of the third term with Claremont's lead growing to 17 points by three quarter-time.
There would then be only one goal in the last quarter as well and that went the way of the Tigers courtesy of Rachel Ortlepp with Claremont securing the 21-point win to lock away top position and to snap the seven-game winning run of Swan Districts.
