EXCITING Fremantle Docker Matt Johnson and first year sensation Reuben Ginbey from the West Coast Eagles have given their insights into making the transition to the AFL.
The pair spoke candidly to players from the WAFC State Academy 16s and 18s squads at last night’s jumper presentation at Optus Stadium.
Johnson, who also came to attention playing with Subiaco at Colts level, spoke of the pride he had wearing the WA jumper.
“I was super excited to represent my state," Johnson said.
“It was a great experience, I learnt a lot and it was a great steppingstone towards an AFL career."
The 20-year-old discussed the rollercoaster of emotions he endured in 2021 when he was overlooked on the opening night of the NAB Draft, only to be selected by the Fremantle Dockers the following day.
Johnson made his debut in the first RAC Derby this year and has played six games in 2023.
Ginbey, taken at pick 9 in last year’s AFL Draft, has made an impact in his first season with the Eagles, earning a Round 3 Rising Star nomination.
His journey to draft selection differed from Johnson, with the powerful midfielder not part of the State 16’s program before enjoying a stand-out performance for WA at last year’s AFL National Championships - U18.
“I was chilling at home in Dunsborough during my 16s year playing with the mighty Sharks, but I wasn’t a superstar, more of a role player," Ginbey said.
“Then at the back end of that year I moved up to Wesley College where I spent the last two years of my schooling and a career in footy started to become a realistic possibility.”.
One of the highlights of the presentation night came when players were handed their jumpers by emotional family members.
WAFC State Talent Manager Adam Jones is optimistic about the potential of both squads.
“We’re excited about the players who will represent their state in 2023," Jones said.
"For our group of 18s there’s the dream of being picked by an AFL club later this year at the NAB AFL Draft, but their first priority is to contribute to a successful team performance.”
The State 18s, to be coached by Ben Dyer, play their first match in the 2023 AFL National Championships on June 11 against the Allies in South Australia.
The State 16s, to be led by Mick Glassborow, face South Australia in their opening 2023 AFL National Championships on June 25.
