The West Australian Football Commission is excited to be taking footy on the road through the State’s Kimberley region, culminating with a WAFL and WAFLW game in Broome on Saturday 27 May.
Following COVID and the devastating floods from ex-tropical cyclone Ellie, which severely impacted the region, the WAFC will spend this week visiting remote communities to engage in football.
Kununurra, Warmun and West Kimberley feature in this road trip with over 1,500 kids in the region taking part in school clinics, female and male junior football clinics.
Coaching seminars will also take place to support development on and off the field.
Michael Roberts, CEO of WAFC said rolling out community programs to the regions is part of the WAFC’s commitment to supporting grassroots football.
"Football brings communities together – the game involves everyone, from players and coaching staff, to umpires, and volunteers, everyone does a tremendous job supporting football,” Roberts said.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for Claremont Football Club to connect with their region through football clinics and provide talent pathways for aspiring young Indigenous footballers.”
Thanks to Rio Tinto, Claremont is taking their WAFLW and WAFL games to Broome, a town steeped in football history.
Claremont Football Club coach Ashley Prescott says the club is privileged to have the Kimberley region as part of their zone.
“Our goal is for every young Kimberley person that has a WAFL or AFL footy dream to see Claremont as being a footy club in Perth that can assist in making that happen,” Prescott said.
“We are so grateful to all the people and programs throughout the Kimberley region and in Broome that put in so much effort in supporting the boys and girls coming though.”
With the support from the Shire of Broome, Claremont will host Subiaco in the WAFLW at midday, before the Round 7 WAFL clash between Claremont and East Fremantle at 2.10pm on Saturday 27 May.
Prescott added that Claremont are looking at putting on a high-quality game of football.
“Our team wants to play with a ‘Kimberley spirit’, a brand of football that is exciting, instinctive and team first,” he said.
Locals can catch Broome product Anthony Treacy in action for Claremont on Saturday.
Also on the day, WKFLW (West Kimberley Football Association) 2022 premiers Broome Towns take on Cable Beach Greenbacks at 10am before Bidyadanga clash with Looma Eagles in the Men’s League at 5pm.
