For every side which didn’t challenge for the WAFLW Premiership in 2022 there’s a strong desire to contend in 2023.
Subiaco Captain Tarnica Golisano and her teammates were onlookers after the home and away season last year.
“I’m sure you can imagine, we were extremely disappointed to miss out on the finals last year.
There’s no doubt that’s fuelling us, and we identified areas that needed improvement at the end of last season and have been working really hard on those throughout the pre-season,” Golisano said.
Golisano has been appointed skipper again as Subiaco looks to improve on finishing fifth in 2022.
“I’m extremely excited to have been selected to captain the girls again this year, for the third year in a row.
I love to share my passion, knowledge and experience with others and especially with the young girls who are the future of our club.
I’m humbled and proud to have this role and can’t wait to see what we can do as a collective this year.
My leadership has definitely grown over the years and I feel through my job during the week as a teacher I’ve learnt how to approach a variety of situations, especially with young athletes.
I’m extremely passionate about supporting and mentoring the future of not only our club but the AFLW as well,” she said.
Like every club entering a new campaign, there’s optimism that success is within reach.
“This year we have a relatively new and fresh group of girls.
In my opinion, we’ve had one of the best pre-seasons in a while and I’m really excited to see how we begin in March.
We have really strong expectations this year and are making sure we hold one another accountable.
The group is really excited, firing and ready to go,” Golisano said.
The addition of East Perth has turned the WAFLW into an eight-team competition as women’s football continues to grow.
“The expansion gives us another team to play.
We just love playing footy so it’s awesome to have another side to challenge.
It’s also great to see more girls getting an opportunity to play footy and experience the competition.
Subiaco plays South Fremantle in the season opener at Leederville Oval on Sunday March 12.
