In the space of three seasons, South Fremantle has gone from new kids on the block to a team targeting WAFLW finals.
The Bulldogs aim to enter new territory on the ladder this year with a familiar face at the helm.
27-year-old Lauren Vecchio will again captain the club to confirm her ability as a leader.
“I’m entering my fifth season as skipper and it’s definitely taught me valuable lessons on and off the field.
Firstly, the importance of open communication before, during and after training and game day.
Another is to remember why we play this amazing sport.
We’re lucky enough to have the opportunity so enjoy the experience,” Vecchio said.
The role of skipper during Pre-Season is one she takes seriously.
“Pre-Season is arguably the most important part of the year for any player.
It sets the tone coming into the season and my role as captain is to encourage and push the girls to improve and get the best out of themselves.
Another focus is building solid relationships within the playing group and coaching staff,” she said.
Since South Fremantle joined the WAFLW in 2021, the competition has since added West Perth and East Perth as women’s football in WA continues to grow.
“It’s been valuable to have spent two years in the competition, but the WAFLW is constantly evolving so it’s hard to be fully prepared for what the season has in store.
What started as a five-team League in 2019 has now expanded to eight sides.
I feel the standards, along with the talent is always improving, so I feel it’s a new experience each season,” she said.
After recording four wins in 2022, expectations at the Bulldogs are rising.
“We’ve recruited a few middle-aged players, along with young talent already at the club.
It’s a good balance and the girls are constantly learning.
A lack of composure and missed opportunities mean we didn’t win more games last year, but the goal is definitely to play finals footy.”
South Fremantle plays Subiaco in its opening match on Sunday March 12 at Leederville Oval.
