Perth has pulled off a stunning Grand Final win in the club’s inaugural season of the WA Wheelchair Football competition at WAWFL Stadium in Mt Claremont.
The Demons headed into the Premiership decider as warm favourites after dominant performances during the regular season when they finished four games clear on top as minor premiers.
Perth defeated Swan Districts in the Qualifying Final but the black and whites proved more than worthy opponents after reaching the final match of the WAWFL season.
Swans dominated the first half and led by 4 points at three quarter time.
But Perth stormed home in the last term to run out winners by 36 points 13.9 (87) to 8.3(51)
Midfielder Rob Petersen was best afield for Perth, while Ebony Stevenson created many chances.
For Swans, big man Ben Moncrieff was outstanding and did his utmost to drag his team to victory.
It’s the second year in a row Swans have fallen at the final hurdle, having been beaten by East Perth in last season’s Grand Final.
Credit though belongs to Perth, which went into their first season with a mix of accomplished wheelchair basketballers and senior league players from their WAFL side.
Despite only two of their players having participated in the WAWFL previously, the Demons deserved their Grand Final triumph on a Super Sunday of finals action.
