WA Wheelchair Team Bound for National ChampionshipsMonday, November 21, 2022 - 10:18 AM

The WA Wheelchair Football Team has departed for Melbourne to participate for the first time at the 2022 Toyota Wheelchair AFL National Championships, which begin tomorrow.

The seven-member of the state team have been competing in the 22nd season of the WA Wheelchair Football League.

WA’s line up recognises players who have showcased leadership, football skills and a passion to grow the game in the state.

WA begins its campaign against Victoria White tomorrow morning at 6am Perth time, followed by matches against Queensland, Victoria Blue, and the Tasmania Devils.

The Day 1 lightning carnival will feature every team in the competition playing each other, to ensure that the allocation of teams to either Division 1 or 2 is fair.

The WA Wheelchair Football League has high hopes for the side, which is proudly supported by APM.

“We were very pleased with how competitive this year's selection was.

The seven athletes selected give us plenty of leadership that will help us have success in Melbourne,” said Ben Moncrieff of the WA Wheelchair Football League.

Putting on an event of such magnitude takes a large operations team and Disability Sports Australia has partnered with the AFL to ensure this year’s championships are an unqualified success.

The WA Wheelchair Football League competition was created in 2021 by the WA All Abilities Football Association, with East Perth crowned inaugural champions.

The competition has grown in 2022 to add the Perth Football Club, the fourth team to enter the competition.

All clubs are represented, with Ryan Zilioli from Subiaco and Simon Koric from Swan Districts, named Captain and Vice-Captain of the team.

Simon Koric (Vice Captain) – Swan Districts FC

The National Championship will be held in Melbourne from Tuesday 22 November – Friday 25 November.
