History Making WA Wheelchair Team Named for National Championships
The WA Wheelchair Football Team will create history when it participates for the first time at this month’s 2022 Toyota Wheelchair AFL National Championships in Melbourne.
The seven-member side is aiming to gain experience on the national stage, and the announcement of the team comes part way through Season 22 of the WA Wheelchair Football League.
WA’s line up recognises players who have showcased leadership, football skills and a passion to grow the game in the state.
The WA Wheelchair Football League has high hopes for the side, which is proudly supported by APM.
“We were very pleased with how competitive this year's selection was.
The seven athletes selected give us plenty of leadership that will help us have success in Melbourne.” said Ben Moncrieff of the WA Wheelchair Football League.
Putting on an event of such magnitude takes a large operations team and Disability Sports Australia has partnered with the AFL to ensure this year’s championships are an unqualified success.
Disability Sports Australia General Manager Ayden Shaw has revealed an exciting broadcasting deal.
“I’m delighted to advise that in 2022 Kayo Sports and Foxtel, in a landmark agreement for our sport, have agreed to provide coverage on Kayo Freebies of all Division 1 matches and the finals of both Divisions,” he said.
The Day 1 lightning carnival will feature every team in the competition playing each other, to ensure that the allocation of teams to either Division 1 or 2 is fair.
The WA Wheelchair Football League competition was created in 2021 by the WA All Abilities Football Association, with East Perth crowned inaugural champions.
The competition has grown in 2022 to add the Perth Football Club, the fourth team to enter the competition.
All clubs are represented, with Ryan Zilioli from Subiaco and Simon Koric from Swan Districts, named Captain and Vice-Captain of the team.
