WAFC partners with HITIQ for Game-changing Concussion StudyThursday, November 3, 2022 - 2:33 PM - by Rachael Osborne

The West Australian Football Commission is pleased to announce its partnership with HITIQ to investigate concussions in WAFL and Community football in 2023.

The partnership aims to review protocols for surveillance, recording and management of concussions in a bid to improve player health and wellbeing.

The program, which involves 780 female and male players across senior and junior football competitions will see players using HITIQ’s Nexus mouthguard technology and CSX Concussion Assessment products throughout the season.

The HITIQ Nexus mouthguards are widely known for their advanced technology and are used by AFL and AFLW players.

Executive Manager Junior, Youth and Community Football Troy Kirkham said he is looking forward to working with HITIQ.

“This enables the WAFC to remain at the forefront of technological advances in terms of monitoring concussions in our game across all levels, as we continue to prioritise the health and wellbeing of all football participants in Western Australia,” Kirkham said.

“The mouthguard pilot program is a first for community football and enables the WAFC to better support players of all ages and across various levels of competition, whilst gaining a clearer understanding of how the rules, style of play and impact could potentially lead to injury.”

HITIQ Chief Executive Officer, Mike Vegar indicated the importance of the partnership.

“Partnering with the Western Australian Football Commission is an important step in extending the reach of HITIQ’s technology platform into a broader Australian Football audience,” Vegar said.

“HITIQ is well positioned to leverage our global head impact databank with years of work across elite sporting teams, including the Australian Football landscape, to support WAFC in their ambitions.”

The program kicks off next year and will play a major part in the West Australian Football Commission’s Concussion Action Plan, which already boasts the 2022 WAFL rule addition to the concussion ‘blue card’ process.
