A stellar effort from Comet Bay College has seen the year eight and nine boys take out the coveted Waalitj Division of the Eagles Schoolboys Cup at Mineral Resources Park for the fourth time.
The Waalitj Division is the top tier of the West Coast Eagles and WAFC 40-year-run competition and saw 10 metro schools battle it out throughout term two.
In near-perfect conditions, Comet Bay College played Warwick Senior High School, who were hoping to win their first title.
It was not to be for Warwick as Comet Bay took out the first half, with Kye Sarich kicking the first three goals within the first 10 minutes of the match.
Comet Bay’s strong defensive backline proved impenetrable, rebounding all of Warwick's attempts and keeping them scoreless in the first half.
The second half brought a slight momentum shift with Warwick’s forward line proving dangerous but not deadly.
It wasn’t enough to take on Comet Bay who won the game five four, 34 to Warwick Senior High who finished one three, nine.
WAFC Schools specialist, Regan Atkinson, said he was impressed with the growing interest in the competition.
“We’ve seen in 2022, an increase in the interest and participation of schools in the Eagles Schoolboys Cup. With more than 110 schools participating across both metropolitan and regional competitions throughout WA this year, it is exciting to see more opportunities given to Year 8 and 9 schoolboys to represent their school in this competition,” he said.
“Credit must go to the teachers who continue to support this competition, as it concludes its 40th year. Congratulations to Comet Bay College, who take out this year’s Waalitj Division, and Kennedy Baptist College, winners of the Eagle Division.”
Regan noted the competition wouldn’t be possible without the partnership between the WAFC and the West Coast Eagles.
“I’d like to thank the West Coast Eagles for their continued support of the Eagles Schoolboys Cup, and look forward to continuing this partnership in the years to come.”
