West Aussie Teenagers to Feature on AFL Grand Final DayWednesday, August 31, 2022 - 8:32 PM - by Mark Readings

Eight West Australians have been selected in a squad of 48 to play in a NAB AFL Futures Match at the MCG as a curtain-raiser to the 2022 Toyota AFL Grand Final.

? The game will feature the best under-17 talent from across the country and will provide an opportunity for next year’s draft prospects to display their talents on the AFL’s biggest stage.

WA players selected are Claremont’s Daniel Curtin, Peel trio Mitchell Edwards, Clay Hall and Ethan Logan, Swan Districts’ Riley Hardeman, Perth’s Coen Livingstone, East Fremantle’s Koen Sanchez, and Subiaco forward Koltyn Tholstrup.

WAFC State Talent Manager Adam Jones has declared the match a huge day for the eight West Australians.

“This will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many of the boys.

It certainly gives the best players for that age group in the country a first-hand experience of what they should be striving for if they’re lucky enough to get drafted.

Although this presents a terrific opportunity for the players, these can be challenging games because players will have limited time with the rest of the squad and coaches.

That being said, anyone who performs well against the best players in the country will catch the eye of AFL recruiters,” Jones said.

All states and territories are represented within the squad, with the group coming together for a training camp ahead of the match, before the players are split into two teams.

The sides will this year be named after retired AFL stars Bachar Houli and Marc Murphy.

AFL Talent Ambassador Kevin Sheehan said it was a great thrill to have the NAB AFL Futures match back on the AFL calendar after a two-year hiatus.

“The AFL Futures match will give AFL recruiting staff and football fans the opportunity to see the future stars of our game on the biggest day of the AFL season.

This will be the fifth time the NAB AFL Futures match has been staged and the first since 2019.

All players who feature in the 2022 NAB AFL Futures match will be eligible for selection in the 2023 NAB AFL Draft,” Sheehan said.

Among those to have previously featured in the NAB AFL Futures match are AFL stars Andrew Brayshaw, Luke Jackson, Zac Bailey, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Caleb Serong, Matt Rowell, Noah Anderson, and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan.

More details on the final teams and coaching staff will be announced in the lead-up to the match.
