Kennedy Baptist College has claimed its first Eagles Schoolboys Cup with a convincing 30-point victory in the Grand Final at Mineral Resources Park.
KBC defeated John XXIII 7.3 (45) to 2.3 (15) after booting four goals to one in the first half.
Tom Dobson received the match ball after winning the Kennedy Baptist College Coach’s Award, while Alex Tang was recognised as John XXIII’s best afield.
The Eagles Schoolboys Cup, now in its 40th year, is a high school competition run by the WAFC, with support from the West Coast Eagles for Year 8 and 9 schoolboys throughout the state.
The Eagle division (the second division of the competition) is played by schools within their local WAFL district during Term 2, with the nine district winners moving through to the Term 3 metro finals.
Regan Atkinson, Schools Specialist at the West Australian Football Commission, was impressed by the standard of footy.
“It’s always great to see the talent across both the Waalitj and Eagle divisions, and last Friday’s match was no exception.
We had two well-drilled, well-prepared teams make it through to the last game,” Atkinson said.
The 40th year of the event confirmed the passion teenagers have for our great game.
“2022 has seen an increase in interest and participation of schools in the Eagles Schoolboys Cup.
With more than 110 schools participating across both metropolitan and regional competitions this year, it’s exciting to see more opportunities given to Year 8 and 9 schoolboys to represent their school in this competition.
Credit must go to the teachers who continue to support the competition.
Congratulations to Kennedy Baptist College, which took out this year’s Eagle Division, and I look forward to next week’s Waalitj Division Grand Final between Warwick Senior High School and Comet Bay College.
I’d also like to thank the West Coast Eagles for their continued support of the Eagles Schoolboys Cup and look forward to continuing this partnership in years to come,” Atkinson said.
High schools interested in participating next year can contact their local WAFC Development Officer (Metro) or WAFC Regional Development Specialist (Regional) to register their interest.
