Champion Swan Districts defender Tony Notte will create another career highlight in Saturday’s match against East Fremantle at the WACA Ground.
The 32-year-old will run out for his 279th match for Swans, taking him past dual premiership player Stan Nowotny (278 games) and into the second position for games played at the famous club.
"I feel very honoured to be playing for the Swan Districts Football Club and to of played so many games," Notte said.
"To be able to sit amongst some of the greats who’ve represented the club is something I’ll always be proud of."
Only four-time Sandover Medallist Billy Walker with 305 matches has played more matches for the black-and-whites.
A highly regarded teenager who represented WA at the 2007 National U18 Championships and playing in the Swan Districts colts premiership of 2007, Notte was selected by the West Coast Eagles with their 20th pick in that year’s draft, going on to play two games.
Hailing from the Upper Swan Junior Football Club, Notte continued to play at Swan Districts while with the Eagles and has remained with the black-and-whites ever since.
Durability has been one of the qualities of the three-time fairest and best winner, lining up in 14 matches this year despite commuting from Busselton each week.
"I don't think there’s a secret formula. I’ve always had a mindset of trying not to miss a training session or a game," Notte said.
"The body has had its share of injuries but being lean and flexible has helped when it comes to recovery times.
"I started as a skinny 18-year-old kid playing league football that struggled at times with the demands of training and playing at a high consistent level.
"After many seasons of maturing and learning I've been able to recognise what it takes to prepare and play at this level."
The lure of playing in a flag for the first time in his career and the prospect of surpassing Walker’s record means Notte is a realistic chance to go around again in 2023.
"Billy’s record is something that comes up at each milestone and is a remarkable achievement for someone I respect highly," Notte said.
"For now, though I’ll concentrate on the remainder of this season to see what happens in 2022.
"Winning a flag is something that drives me to keep playing. I've been at the club during some tough times, so to be in a position where we have a group that can challenge is exciting."
