WA has ended its NAB U16 AFL National Championship campaign on a high with a win over the previously unbeaten Vic Metro side in Adelaide. 

The West Australians ran out winners by 16 points after setting up the victory in the first quarter, booting five goals to two. 

The performance drew high praise from coach Ross McQueen, who oversaw back-to-back success against Vic Country and Vic Metro. 

“I’m happy with the result...We watched Vic Metro beat South Australia on Tuesday and knew it would be a great challenge for us,” McQueen said. 

The most pleasing aspect to come out of the game was we could see a definite improvement from game one to game three.” 

Otis Harvey led the way for WA with 20 disposals and two goals, while Chayse Martinson was also one of the better players on the ground with 23 possessions. 

The coach was delighted the group clicked against quality opposition. 

“We thought different players this game had their best games, and as a team, we were able to learn from our previous games and improve,” McQueen explained. 

“We made a good start and the players really competed well all day,” 

Our ball movement at times was exciting and the players looked to develop their understanding of how to defend.” 

WA started the Championships with a disappointing effort against South Australia, but that experience proved a blessing for the final two matches.  

“From the second half of Game One against South Australia the players have grown in their understanding of what’s required to play at higher levels. 

Getting the win in the second game gave them the confidence to keep taking risks.  

The whole squad has trained with real purpose and a commitment to learning and improving,” he said. 

With three games completed the campaign is over for WA, with most players heading back to their WAFL clubs. 

“We’ll have meetings with the players individually and I expect several of them will train with their WAFL Colts teams, in the hope of breaking into their respective sides. 

Of course, some have already played this year,” McQueen said
