CLAREMONT and East Fremantle did as expected and kept winning in the last round of the 2022 WAFLW season, but all eyes were on Subiaco and how they performed against Peel Thunder to determine the last finals spot on Saturday.

It was only fitting that fourth position and the last spot in the finals would be determined in the very last game of the 2022 WAFLW home and away season.

In the end, the Lions lost to the Thunder in a five-point thriller and that was good news for Swan Districts who held onto their finals position as a result while sitting back with the Round 17 bye.

The last round action in the WAFLW competition got underway on Saturday at Revo Fitness Stadium with Claremont gearing up for the finals defeating West Perth 10.9 (69) to 0.0 (0).

Then at Fremantle Community Bank Oval, East Fremantle completed their perfect season with a 10.7 (67) to 2.3 (15) derby victory against South Fremantle.

And finally, all went on the line in terms of who made finals with Peel Thunder winning a tight battle over Subiaco 2.9 (21) to 2.4 (16) at Leederville Oval.

The results meant that East Fremantle finished the season with the perfect 14-0 record to claim the minor premiership ahead of the second placed Claremont (11-3).

Peel Thunder finished third at 8-6 and Swan Districts clung to fourth at 6-8. Subiaco ended up fifth with a 6-8 record ahead of South Fremantle (4-10) and West Perth (0-14).

That sets the stage for the finals to commence this coming Sunday with East Fremantle playing Claremont in the second semi-final at New Choice Homes Park.

The winner will advance straight to the Grand Final while the loser will get a second chance in the preliminary final the following week up against the winner of the first semi-final between Peel Thunder and Swan Districts at Mandurah's Lane Group Stadium.

Meanwhile the final round of the WAFLW Reserves competition also took place on Saturday with East Fremantle defeating Claremont 4.4 (28) to 2.8 (20) and Peel Thunder beating Subiaco 6.7 (43) to 0.1 (1).

Those results mean that East Fremantle finishes as the minor premiers with nine wins, two losses and a draw. Claremont is second just percentage behind while Swan Districts ended up third at 7-5 and Subiaco fourth at 2-10. Peel finished fifth also with two wins and 10 losses.

That sets up the finals beginning this coming Sunday with East Fremantle hosting Claremont in the second semi-final with the winner to advance to the Grand Final.

The loser will take on the winner in the preliminary final of the first semi-final between Swan Districts and Subiaco at Mandurah's Lane Group Stadium.

And in the Youth Girls Rogers Cup last round action, Swan Districts defeated East Perth 5.7 (37) to 3.2 (20), East Fremantle beat South Fremantle 9.3 (57) to 6.5 (41) and Peel Thunder downed Subiaco 12.12 (84) to 2.2 (14) on Saturday.

Lastly on Sunday it was West Perth defeating Claremont 5.9 (39) to 5.5 (35) at Revo Fitness Stadium.

East Fremantle secured the Rogers Cup minor premiership as well with 13 wins and a loss for the season. Peel Thunder finished second with a 10-4 record with South Fremantle third at 9-5 and Claremont fourth at 8-6.

Reigning premiers West Perth just missed the finals with seven wins, six losses and a draw to finish ahead of Swan Districts (4-10), Subiaco (3-11) and East Perth (1-1-12).

That means that on Sunday, East Fremantle plays Peel Thunder in the second semi-final at New Choice Homes Park with a spot in the Grand Final on the line.

The loser will then play the winner of the first semi-final between South Fremantle and Claremont at Lane Group Stadium in the following week's preliminary final.

 

WAFLW PREMIERSHIP SEASON – ROUND 17

CLAREMONT 10.9 (69) defeated WEST PERTH 0.0 (0)

Claremont geared up for its WAFLW finals assault by holding West Perth scoreless and winning by 69 points at Revo Fitness Stadium on Saturday.

The Tigers had already locked away second position and a spot in the second semi-final well before Saturday's final round clash, but they did lose to Subiaco last week and wouldn't want that sort of form going into the finals.

Claremont produced a dominant performance on Saturday at home to West Perth to have the only 19 scoring shots of the game, kick the only 10 goals and have 37 entries inside-50 to just five.

That saw the Tigers beat the Falcons 10.9 (69) to 0.0 (0) to finish the season with an 11-3 record in second spot while the first season in the WAFLW competition for West Perth saw them finish winless.

Claremont couldn’t be budged from second position no matter the result on Saturday but the Tigers did want to ensure they were in good form entering their second semi-final clash against East Fremantle on the back of last week's loss to Subiaco.

The Tigers took less than nine minutes to already have three goals on the board thanks to Brooke Whyte, Sarah Garstone and Tayla Thorogood.

That saw Claremont take a 20-point lead into quarter-time before they kicked another three goals in the second term from Rachel Ortlepp, Claudia Wright and Thorogood to see them up by 39 points at the half-time break.

The Tigers added two more goals from Jasmin Stewart and Thorogood in the third quarter, and then goals in the last term from Stewart and Mhicca Carter gave them the 10.9 (69) to 0.0 (0) win heading into the finals.

Tayla Thorogood ended up kicking three goals from eight kicks, seven tackles and four marks for Claremont with Jasmin Stewart kicking two goals from 23 possessions, five marks, four tackles and three inside-50 entries.

Mhicca Carter also finished with 20 touches and seven tackles for the Tigers with Brooke Whyte ending up with 16 disposals, Claudia Wright 16, Sarah Viney 15 and Matilda Husband 12 to go with 20 hit outs and three tackles.

Keely Byrne finished with 19 possessions and five tackles for West Perth with Kaitlyn Roper also finishing the season gathering another 14 disposals to go with four tackles.

Kayla Van Den Heever also collected 13 touches, Karla Stagg 12, Jaymee Duke 11, Jeevna Heer 10 and Liliana Grassenis 10 along with four tackles.

 

SOUTH FREMANTLE 2.3 (15) lost to EAST FREMANTLE 10.7 (67)

East Fremantle completed its perfect season and remained unbeaten against South Fremantle in WAFLW derby encounters with a 52-point win on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs hosted the Sharks at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with South Fremantle trying to end its improved 2022 season on a high while East Fremantle put its undefeated record on the line.

The Sharks ended up proving too strong once more to remain unbeaten this season and in the WAFLW against South Fremantle with the 10.7 (67) to 2.3 (15) victory.

The win means that East Fremantle finishes the season with a perfect 14-0 record ahead of hosting Claremont in this Sunday's second semi-final while South Fremantle's best of three WAFLW seasons saw them end on 4-10.

It would haven quite the scalp if South Fremantle could knock off East Fremantle to end the 2022 season, but that became decidedly unlikely when the Sharks kicked the opening three goals inside nine minutes.

Melissa Caulfield, Ashlee Atkins and Mylee Leitch all kicked truly before South Fremantle closed the first quarter with a goal to Poppy Stockwell to stay within 14 points.

The Sharks kicked the only two goals of the second quarter with goals to Taya Chambers and Caulfield to head into half-time in control leading by 24 points.

East Fremantle extended its lead further to start the third quarter with a goal to Georgie Cleaver, but the Bulldogs kept on fighting and did get a goal back courtesy of Rebecca Torpy.

The Sharks closed the quarter with another goal to Caulfield to lead by 33 points and then East Fremantle kicked the only three goals of the last term with goals to Anjelique Raison and two more to Caulfield.

That saw the Sharks score the 10.7 (67) to 2.3 (15) victory to complete the perfect season ahead of hosting the second semi-final next week.

Without Julia Teakle in attack for East Fremantle, it was Melissa Caulfield who stepped up as the major target in the forward-line and took full advantage of that opportunity. She ended up kicking five goals from 11 kicks, three tackles and two marks.

Abbey Amaranti finished the game with 20 possessions for the Sharks while Larissa Versaci continued her tremendous form with another 19 touches, nine tackles, seven inside 50s and six marks.

Amber Kinnane added 18 disposals, Sharon Wong 17, Ashlee Atkins 16, Georgie Cleaver 16 and Emmelie Fiedler had 22 hit outs.

South Fremantle's two goals of the game came courtesy of Poppy Stockwell and Rebecca Torpy.

Bryany Parker was playing her second ever WAFLW game and was impressive for South Fremantle with 19 possessions, five tackles, three marks and two inside-50 entries.

Stockwell also gathered 16 touches, Lauren Vecchio 16 (six tackles, four marks), Stephanie Mostert 13 and Kiara Templeman 12 while Ella Ward finished with 23 hit outs.
 

SUBIACO 2.4 (16) lost to PEEL THUNDER 2.9 (21)

The stage was set for the last finals position in the WAFLW competition to be determined in the very last game on Saturday at Leederville Oval.

Subiaco was hosting Peel Thunder with the fate of both the Lions and Swan Districts who had the final round bye on the line depending on the result.

It was a low scoring affair but Subiaco did manage to kick the only goal of the first half to at least at that stage be on track to qualify for a finals spot and to knock the Swans out.

However, Peel fought back and set up the eventual win with the only two goals of the third quarter to end up winning 2.9 (21) to 2.4 (16).

That improved the Thunder to an 8-6 record on the season to finish in third position and remain a chance of a third straight premiership in the WAFLW competition.

The result means Subiaco finished in fifth position behind Swan Districts so it's the Swans ending up fourth and to play Peel now in the first semi-final.

The seasons of both Subiaco and Swan Districts were on the line with the Lions taking on the Thunder, and neither team managed to kick a goal in the opening quarter.

The only goal of the first half went the way of Subiaco in the second quarter thanks to Kate Pocsidio and that helped the Lions to a five-point lead going into the half-time break.

Peel might have been locked into third spot no matter the result, but they wanted to ensure they went into the finals in winning form and the Thunder dominated the third quarter.

They held Subiaco scoreless while kicking goals through Kira Phillips and Arianne Norris to grab a 10-point lead heading into three quarter-time.

While Subiaco kicked the only goal of the final term courtesy of Hanna Dethlefsen, they couldn’t get any closer than five points and Peel held on to win 2.9 (21) to 2.4 (16).

That meant that Peel knocked Subiaco out of the finals race and put Swan Districts into it, and now the Thunder host Swans in next Sunday's first semi-final.

Peel's goals in the win were kicked by Kira Phillips and Arianne Norris.

Chloe Wrigley continued her strong form for the Thunder racking up another 24 possessions to go with nine tackles, seven marks and three entries inside the forward 50.

Jaide Britton also gathered 23 touches, Greta McKinley 21, Ebony Dowson 20 and Bella Mann 14.

Subiaco's goals came courtesy of Kate Pocsidio and Hanna Dethlefsen as their season came to an end.

Tiah Toth ended the season in spectacular form for the Lions with 27 touches, 11 marks, eight tackles and two inside-50 entries.

Tarnica Golisano also gathered 24 possessions for Subiaco, Madizen Wilkins 21, Madison Dodd 20 and Hayley Corlett 16.
