The Mid West town of Northampton is ramping up preparations for this month’s historic WAFL double header.
The Festival of Footy, as it’s being dubbed, will provide a huge morale boost and valuable funds for the local community following the devastating effects of Tropical Cyclone Seroja.
The day will feature a double header, with East Fremantle’s WAFLW team hosting Claremont before the Sharks WAFL League side plays East Perth at 2.30pm.
Also on the day, Northampton will host Brigades in a GNFLW match in the morning, before a GNFL showdown between the same sides at 4.20pm.
The game day flyer is now circulating, with East Fremantle proud to be taking the game to a town steeped in football history.
East Fremantle Football Club Business Development Manager Paula Barnden is confident the event will be a huge success.
“Being part of our zone, and with such a strong history of producing outstanding footballers, we believe the matches in Northampton will inspire a generation of future champions,” Barnden said.
Thanks to Rio Tinto, the weekend will also see East Fremantle deliver a range of Indigenous Engagement activities including:
Coaching, Education and Cultural Awareness session with key football stakeholders;
Welcome to Country on match day performed by a local Indigenous elder; and
Indigenous Leadership breakfast with Michael Mitchell on Sunday 1 May prior to a Colts game between Railways and Mullewa.
In addition, there will be Talent Squad Training, School Clinics, Umpire Education and Auskick matches over the two days.
The WAFC is partnering with the AFL Rams Community Support Fund for this special weekend.
The Commission is appreciative of the support provided by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Shire of Northampton, Great Northern Football League, the WA Country Football League, and the competing clubs.
