Peel Thunder coach Geoff Valentine has a wealth of experience, but his new role will take him outside his comfort zone.
Not only does Valentine have the task of lifting Peel up the ladder after finishing seventh last year with six wins and twelve losses, but he also faces a constant juggling act with his squad, pending requirements by the Fremantle Dockers.
Valentine revealed the offer to be part of the host club arrangement came out of the blue from coach Justin Longmuir.
“The opportunity to get involved with Fremantle and be in a learning environment, surrounded by likeminded people, was too good to refuse.
Being a WAFL coach can be a bit isolating at times”, Valentine said.
After spending three seasons at West Perth, including leading the club into last year’s finals, Valentine is in the process of building new relationships.
“I’m getting into a routine and what I’ve noticed is there’s good energy and I’ve been really impressed by the quality of people at Peel and Fremantle,” Valentine said.
A surprise addition to pre-season training late last year was former Docker Harley Bennell.
“He’s been super impressive after turning up to training unannounced post-Christmas.
We know his skill and his running ability but what impressed me was his voice and enthusiasm to lead a young team around the park.”
Peel’s plan is based around winning early matches in Mandurah.
“I know we’ve got three of the first four games at home.
We’ll get through those first couple and try to bank some early wins and set up what could be another season impacted by Covid.”
Peel opens their 2022 WAFL campaign against East Fremantle at home on Good Friday.
