WAFLW Round 4 WrapMonday, March 14, 2022 - 11:17 AM - by Chris Pike

CLAREMONT maintained top spot in the WAFLW competition with another big win on Sunday while East Fremantle beat Peel Thunder in the battle of undefeated teams and Swan Districts showed they are warming into the 2022 season.

Round 4 in the WAFLW competition for 2022 got underway on Saturday evening at Mandurah's Lane Group Stadium with Peel Thunder and East Fremantle putting their undefeated starts to the season on the line.

It was the Sharks who prevailed for their third win from three games so far this season, beating the Thunder 9.6 (60) to 7.5 (47).

The other two matches in Round 4 took place on Sunday afternoon beginning at Joondalup's Provident Financial Oval with a first ever home game in the competition for West Perth.

It didn’t quite go to plan for the Falcons with Claremont retaining top position with the 11.12 (78) to 0.0 (0) victory.

The last game of the round was a rematch of last year's preliminary final with Swan Districts repeating the dose beating Subiaco 11.6 (72) to 3.5 (23).

Those results mean that after four rounds of the 2022 WAFLW season, it's Claremont still on top of the ladder with a 3-1 record and a remarkable 493.2 percentage.

East Fremantle remains the only undefeated team left with a perfect 3-0 record but a percentage 372 points behind Claremont!

Swan Districts have improved to third position at 2-2 while Peel Thunder is rounding out the top four at 2-1. South Fremantle is fifth at 1-2, Subiaco sixth at 1-3 and West Perth last at 0-3 and with the unfortunate percentage of 3.6.

Meanwhile in the WAFLW Reserves action in Round 4, East Fremantle defeated Peel Thunder 9.6 (60) to 1.3 (9) at Lane Group Stadium and Swan Districts had a massive 15.10 (100) to 0.1 (1) victory against Claremont at Steel Blue Oval.

The Youth Girls Rogers Cup got underway back on Friday night with South Fremantle defeating East Perth 11.15 (81) to 1.1 (7) at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

Then on Saturday afternoon in Mandurah, Peel Thunder beat East Fremantle 5.6 (36) to 3.3 (21).

And on Sunday, Swan Districts downed Subiaco 4.5 (29) to 2.2 (14) and Claremont prevailed 7.8 (50) to 1.3 (9) over West Perth at Provident Financial Oval.

WAFLW PREMIERSHIP SEASON – ROUND 4

PEEL THUNDER 7.5 (47) lost to EAST FREMANTLE 9.6 (60)

East Fremantle remains the last undefeated team in the WAFLW competition following Saturday night's 13-point victory against Peel Thunder at Mandurah's Lane Group Stadium.

Peel opened the season where they are attempting to win a third straight premiership beating Subiaco and South Fremantle before the Round 3 bye.

East Fremantle had the bye in the opening round before opening up their new season with victories against Swan Districts and Claremont to set up a fascinating Saturday evening Round 4 contest.

The two undefeated teams locked horns on Saturday night and it was a tight game from the opening bounce.

It was a goal apiece in the first quarter but it was Peel who took a two-point advantage into the quarter-time break on the back of having four scoring shots to two.

Things heated up in the second quarter with East Fremantle managing to kick three goals and Peel two, and that saw the Sharks take a seven-point lead into half-time.

The scoreboard kept ticking over in the third quarter as well with another three goals to East Fremantle and two from Peel. That saw the Sharks extend their advantage to 14 points by three quarter-time.

Peel tried to mount a fightback in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t to be with East Fremantle able to be the team to remain undefeated with the 9.6 (60) to 7.5 (47) victory away from home.

Madeline Ross kicked two goals from nine kicks in the victory for East Fremantle with Larissa Versaci and Anjelique Raison also booting two goals apiece.

Mylee Leitch compiled 16 possessions for the Sharks along with six inside 50s and five marks.

Cleaver also racked up 15 disposals, Versaci 14, Doma Fedele 13, Ashleigh Gomes 13, Beth Beckett 12, Hayley O'Donnell 12 and Sharon Wong 12.

Young forward star kicked three goals in the loss for Peel to go with 11 kicks, five marks and five tackles.

WEST PERTH 0.0 (0) lost to CLAREMONT 11.12 (78)

West Perth made another slice of history by hosting their first ever WAFLW game on Sunday but Claremont ensured there wasn’t much celebration done by holding the Falcons scoreless and winning by 78 points.

West Perth has entered the WAFLW competition for the first time in 2022 and after opening up losses to South Fremantle and Swan Districts, they were playing their first home game at Provident Financial Oval on Sunday.

Awaiting them was the league-leading Claremont and the Tigers put together an impressive performance to maintain their hold on top spot.

The win means that Claremont now sits clear on top of the WAFLW ladder thanks to a massive percentage. Despite having lost narrowly to East Fremantle last week, the Tigers have scored 217 points in their four games this season and conceded only 44.

Things haven’t quite gone as smoothly for West Perth. The Falcons have only scored a total of 1.3 in three games now while having conceded 250 points to South Fremantle, Swan Districts and Claremont.

West Perth was on home turf for the first ever time in a WAFLW match, but it wasn’t the start they were hoping for with Claremont having the only six shots of the opening quarter.

The Tigers converted three of those into goals to take a 21-point lead into the quarter-time break.

Claremont was able to kick further away in the second term with another four goals while also holding the Falcons scoreless to lead by 47 points at half-time.

West Perth did a better job defensively in the third quarter to restrict Claremont to just the one goal. However, they still weren’t able to score themselves with the Tigers' lead growing to 58 points at three quarter-time.

Claremont piled on another three goals in the last term and again held West Perth scoreless to come away with the 11.12 (78) to 0.0 (0) victory to retain their position on top of the WAFLW ladder.

Tessa Doumanis had a day out for Claremont kicking four goals to go with 19 possessions and five marks.

Eva Campo also kicked three goals for the Tigers along with 16 disposals with Mikayla Western, Katherine Bennett, Brooke Whyte and Tayla Thorogood the other goal scorers.

There were plenty of Tigers players who had big performances and none more so than Adele Arnup in the ruck. She finished with 21 possessions, 25 hit outs, five tackles, four marks and four inside-50 entries.

Sarah Viney also gathered 24 disposals, Sasha Goranova 23, Kate Orme 18, Western 17, Bennett 17 and Julia Uhe 17.

While West Perth didn’t manage to score, Karla Stagg was impressive with 17 possessions and four marks.

Jaymee Duke also collected 13 disposals for the Falcons, Kayla Van Den Heever 13, Grace Betti 13 and Nicole Bombardieri 10. Cameron Dawson fought valiantly in the ruck as well with 19 hit outs.

SWAN DISTRICTS 11.6 (72) defeated SUBIACO 3.5 (23)

Swan Districts and Subiaco were both coming off their first wins of the season coming into their Round 4 battle at Steel Blue Oval on Sunday.

Coming off a Grand Final appearance last year, Swans started the 2022 season with losses to Claremont and East Fremantle before getting on the board last week with a thumping win of West Perth.

Subiaco was only pipped on the siren against Peel in Round 1 in Mandurah before a tough loss to Claremont, but the Lions bounce back last week to beat South Fremantle.

It was always going to be a fascinating contest between two teams trying to build some momentum coming off their first wins of the season in their first meeting with another since last year's preliminary final.

It was Swan Districts who started the better, holding Subiaco scoreless in the first quarter and having the only two scoring shots for a goal and to lead by seven points at quarter-time.

While Subiaco did get on the scoreboard with a goal in the second term, Swans kicked further away with three goals of their own to head into the half-time break leading by 21 points.

Swan Districts was starting to string some exciting football together from there too with the black-and-whites kicking another four goals in the third quarter. The Lions added just the one and the Swans lead grew to a commanding 37 points by three quarter-time.

It was all Swans again in the fourth quarter with the home team kicking another three goals to one from Subiaco to come away with the 11.6 (72) to 3.5 (23) victory.

Taylah Edwards finished off the game kicking three goals for Swan Districts with Abbygail Bushby continuing her good form kicking another two.

Ashley Sharp, Tara Stribley, Courtney Zappara, 200-gamer Lauren Osborne, Sophie Proudfoot and Charli Wicksteed all kicked a goal apiece for the black-and-whites as well.

Swans captain Jess Cox continued her superb form as well with another 28 possessions, five marks, four tackles and three entries inside the forward 50.

Along with kicking a goal, Stribley racked up 26 disposals for Swans with Ruby Mahony also collecting 21 touches, Tyla Fitzgerald 18, Zappara 15 and Jaime Henry.

Osborne also had 17 possessions, four marks, three inside 50s and two tackles to go with her goal in her 200th game for Swan Districts.

Hayley Corlett kicked two goals for Subiaco with Nyra Anderson the other goal scorer in her first chance to play against her former team.

Helen Taylor ended up collecting 18 possessions for Subiaco, Tarnica Golisano 15, Jaymie Harken 12, Anderson 12 and Clare McCarthy 12. Tess Lyons battled hard in the ruck as well for 19 hit outs.
