The West Australian Football Commission (WAFC), the governing body of football in Western Australia, is seeking expressions of interest from persons wishing to be considered for appointment as a Commissioner. The role of the Commission is to oversee the promotion, development and management of football throughout the State and provide guidance, planning and leadership to all levels of the game.
The West Australian Football Commission revised its strategy, structure and funding models in 2020. This involved a review which focused on our financial model, staffing structure and included opportunities for partnering with our stakeholders to deliver WAFC services and programs. The overall review integrates into a reset and revitalisation of football right across WA.
We are seeking a diversified representation of Commissioners, by reference to gender, age, culture, background and ethnicity, who can assist in leading both the WAFC and the WA Football Industry through this period of transformation, support the good governance and accountability of our organisation and foster strong relations across all stakeholders to our game. The overarching responsibilities of Commissioners are to protect and to grow football by overseeing the promotion, development and management of football in WA as well as providing guidance, planning and leadership to all levels of the game.
Experience and exposure to community sport, not just football, will be highly regarded. A level of participation and engagement is required with stakeholders as well as the ability to contribute actively at board level with independence and objectivity. Completion of the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ Governance course is a desirable qualification.
There are three positions to be filled, two of which relate to Commissioners who will retire by rotation and are eligible to stand again and may be seeking reappointment. All three appointments will be effective for 3-year terms from 1 January 2022 to 1 January 2025. The position of Commissioner is not remunerated.
The Commission is a not-for-profit sports association established in 1989 and is responsible for the overall development and strategic direction of football in Western Australia. The Commission oversees the West Australian Football League, Junior and Senior Community Football including regional football, women’s football, Auskick and inclusive football. The ownership of Indian Pacific Limited (West Coast Eagles) and the Fremantle Football Club is controlled by the Commission as subsidiaries of its business.
As the Commission strives to be as diverse as the communities we represent we actively encourage applications from women, indigenous and multicultural candidates.
