Optus WAFLW Round 12 WrapMonday, May 24, 2021 - 1:25 PM - by Chris Pike

IT was a fascinating Round 12 in the WAFLW competition with Swan Districts winning by a point for the second time in their last three games while Peel Thunder kept on winning too and East Fremantle kept its finals hopes alive.

Round 12 in the Optus WAFLW Premiership Season signalled the start of the final month of the home and away season for 2021, and the three matches across the weekend in wet conditions produced some fascinating results.

The round got underway at Mandurah's David Grays Arena on Saturday and reigning premiers Peel Thunder proved too good for South Fremantle, holding the Bulldogs goalless to win 4.5 (29) to 0.5 (5).

Subiaco has been in impressive form to turn their season around and break into the top four, and the Lions took it right up to the undefeated Swan Districts at Leederville Oval on Sunday.

But for the second time in the last three weeks, Swans pulled off another one-point escape act to win 3.5 (23) to 3.4 (22) and maintain their undefeated season so far in 2021.

East Fremantle was just about out of finals contention but the Sharks revived some life back into their hopes of breaking back into the top four with Sunday's 6.9 (45) to 3.6 (24) win against Claremont at New Choice Homes Park.

Now with three rounds of the home and away season remaining in the WAFLW competition, Swan Districts is three games and percentage clear on top of the ladder with a perfect 12-0 record to have that top spot secure.

Peel Thunder is also well and truly clear with a three-game and percentage edge on the rest in second spot with a 9-3 record.

Claremont is still third at 6-6 despite the loss on Sunday while Subiaco (5-7) missed a chance to further consolidate their finals position even though they do still stay in fourth after Round 12.

East Fremantle is 4-8 and kept its finals prospects alive by winning on Sunday while South Fremantle remains winless after 12 attempts.
