FOLLOWING an exciting opening weekend of action to begin the 2021 Optus WAFLW Premiership Season, Round 2 is shaping up fascinating as well highlighted by Saturday night's Grand Final rematch between Subiaco and Peel Thunder.

The opening round of the 2021 WAFLW season saw proceedings get underway with Peel Thunder unfurling their premiership banner from last year and going on to defeat East Fremantle 8.7 (55) to 3.5 (23).

The other two matches took place on Sunday afternoon with Subiaco narrowly holding out South Fremantle 4.13 (37) to 5.4 (34) while Swan Districts beat Claremont in a low-scoring affair, 2.6 (18) to 1.6 (12).

That all sets the stage for a tantalising Round 2 in the WAFLW competition beginning on Saturday evening at Leederville Oval with the Grand Final rematch from last year between Subiaco and Peel Thunder.

The other two matches then take place on Sunday starting with South Fremantle hosting Swan Districts at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

The round then wraps up with Claremont taking on East Fremantle at Claremont's Revo Fitness Stadium.

OPTUS WAFLW PREMIERSHIP SEASON PREVIEW

The three matches in Round 2 of the WAFLW season all loom as fascinating contests and none more so than the Grand Final rematch on Saturday night between Subiaco and Peel at Leederville Oval.

Peel pulled off the completed fairytale last year coming from the wooden spoon the previous season to then win the Grand Final against Subiaco to claim the 2020 premiership.

That gives the Thunder great confidence for them to now bring into the 2021 season and that was on show at home last Saturday when they started in impressive fashion defeating East Fremantle by 32 points.

That gives the Thunder plenty of momentum coming into Saturday's away clash but there's going to be no shortage of motivation for the Lions in their first home game of the season.

Not only did Subiaco lose the Grand Final last year to Peel, but that was on the back of bowing out in the preliminary final the season before when they had also finished on top of the ladder.

So the Lions will be looking at the 2021 season as their time to take advantage of how good they have been the last two WAFLW seasons and Saturday night against Peel in the Grand Final rematch provides them the chance to make a real statement.

Subiaco made a winning start to the new season last Sunday as well but the Lions had to do it the hard way and hold off a fast finishing South Fremantle to end up winning by three points.

The clash between Subiaco and Peel Thunder begins at Leederville Oval at 6pm on Saturday night.

Round 2 then continues on Sunday morning at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with South Fremantle playing host to Swan Districts.

South Fremantle was new to the WAFLW competition in 2020 and struggled early but got better the longer the shortened and delayed season went on, and then the Bulldogs produced an encouraging performance to open 2021.

South Fremantle might have still lost to Subiaco but only by three points last Sunday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval and they almost pulled off the comeback victory with a brilliant fourth quarter performance.

They take on a Swan Districts team who made a winning start to the new season last Sunday with a six-point victory against Claremont on home turf at Steel Blue Oval.

The game gets underway at the port at 9.30am and will be streamed live thanks to The West Australian.

The final game of the second round of the 2021 WAFLW season features two teams in Claremont and East Fremantle searching for their first wins of the new campaign.

Claremont lost to Swan Districts by a goal last Sunday against Swan Districts while East Fremantle came up short against reigning premiers Peel Thunder last Saturday evening in Mandurah.

Now both the Tigers and Sharks look to open their accounts for 2021 on Sunday at Claremont's Revo Fitness Stadium.

The game bounces down at 1pm and will be streamed live courtesy of Front Row Screens.
