The West Australian Football Commission announced its financial result for the 2020 season at its Annual General Meeting tonight, Thursday, February 25. 

Following arguably the most difficult football season in the modern era, the WAFC has announced a net loss of $115,553.

The ability to get the football seasons away, a reduction in staff hours, a stringent review of all expenditure and receipt of government subsidies limited the size of the loss.

While initial projections predicted a much greater loss due to COVID-19, the unwavering support of all key funding partners including the State Government, AFL, West Coast Eagles, Fremantle Dockers and major sponsors Optus, Carlton & United Breweries, Kia, Simply Energy and Healthway supported the overall sustainability of WA Football. 

WAFC Chairman Hon. Wayne Martin expressed thanks to all key football stakeholders for their support throughout a significant period of challenge. 

“While a loss is never a good thing, the containment of the loss to a little over $100,000 is a reasonable outcome given the significance of the pandemic on football in Western Australia,” Martin said.

“Despite recording an overall loss for the year, the WAFC managed to increase its cashflow for the year by $6.3 million, due to the receipt of prior years’ royalty payments from both AFL clubs.”

The WAFC needed to make a number of difficult decisions to reduce its staffing and operating costs, to ensure the game’s financial sustainability over the coming years. 

“Financial sustainability is essential if we are to fulfil our mission of increasing participation in our game across the entire community - boys, girls, men and women in metropolitan and regional WA,” Martin said.

“Having to implement a workforce restructure to make significant changes to our staff was an extremely difficult but necessary process.”

“Many staff took reduced hours for a number of months and unfortunately some workers have left the organisation.”

“I thank all staff and their families for the sacrifices that have been made throughout 2020.”
