Governor Stirling Senior High School completed a hat trick of successes in the Eagles Schoolboys Cup, defeating Comet Bay College by five points in the Waalitj Division Grand Final, played on Thursday, the 24th of September, at New Choice Homes Park in East Fremantle.
The 2018 and 2019 champions got off to a fast start at “Shark Park”, booting the first three goals of the game in quick succession. Governor Stirling’s dominance through the midfield shone early, however a couple of goals to Comet Bay against the run of play kept themselves in the contest at half time, going into the main break 10 points down: 4.1.25 to 2.3.15.
Comet Bay College came out ready to play in the second half, and it was their composure through the midfield and their rebounding off half back that really stood out. The Comet Bay forwards started to receive plenty of opportunities, and a clever goal with three minutes to play reduced Governor Stirling’s lead to five points. When “Best on Ground” Kaden Taylor intercepted a dangerous Comet Bay forward entry, with a brilliant diving spoil in the last minute, it seemed like Govo would hang on. Comet Bay had one last chance in the dying seconds, but the Governor Stirling backline stood strong, resulting in their school winning their third consecutive Eagles Schoolboys Cup. The final score was Governor Stirling Senior High School 5.3.33 to Comet Bay College 4.4.28.
Taylor was deservedly awarded the Ross Davis Medal for his performance for Governor Stirling, while his teammate Trent Donovan was presented with the match ball as the coach’s award. Comet Bay’s coach’s award went to Reece Torrent.
WAFC Schools Specialist Regan Atkinson paid tribute to the schools involved in this year’s competition.
“The efforts of all schools and teachers involved in this year’s Eagles Schoolboys Cup have certainly not gone unnoticed. It has obviously been a difficult year for everyone, and I acknowledge those teachers who have worked hard behind the scenes to ensure this year’s competition would go ahead. The football played today and throughout this term has been of a high standard, which is a credit to the players and schools that participated. The WAFC would like to thank the West Coast Eagles for their continued support of schoolboy football, and the East Fremantle Football Club for hosting this year’s Grand Final.”
