Governor Stirling Senior High School have gone back-to-back in the Freo Dockers Cup Moore Division, defeating Mater Dei College by four points in a nail-biting Grand Final played at the Fremantle Football Club in Cockburn.
In a repeat of the 2019 Grand Final, Mater Dei appeared to start the stronger of the two sides, before a goal prior to the half time siren saw Governor Stirling take a slender five-point lead into the main break. Neither team managed to grab the ascendancy in the second half, as both sides showed their competitive streak, ensuring that it would go down to the wire. A late goal to Governor Stirling saw them regain a lead that they managed to hold on to, prevailing 2.2.14 to Mater Dei’s 1.4.10.
Chanel Jetta was named the best player for the winning side, while Mater Dei presented their award to Emily Bennett for her outstanding performance.
The players from both sides were presented their premiership and runners-up medals by Fremantle Dockers AFLW stars Kara Antonio and Kiara Bowers, while Dockers coach Trent Cooper was also on hand to assist with the presentations.
In the White Division Grand Final, Comet Bay College defeated La Salle College by 14 points to win their first ever Freo Dockers Cup title. Comet Bay dominated possession and territory in the first half, however inaccurate kicking in front of goal kept La Salle in the game. The 11-point half time lead was reduced to five points in the first minute of the second half, as La Salle hit the scoreboard immediately, however some clever work by the Comet Bay forwards enabled them to establish a handy lead that would not be run down. Comet Bay victorious in the end, 3.8.26 to La Salle’s 2.0.12.
Midfielder Isla Smith was awarded the best player award for Comet Bay College, while Caitlyn Appleford was judged best afield for La Salle College.
WAFC Schools Specialist, Regan Atkinson, said that the opportunity to play both Grand Finals at the Fremantle Dockers headquarters was a thrill for all players.
“It was a fantastic competition in an albeit different year and to be able to play the Grand Finals at the Fremantle Football Club’s facility was a fitting way to conclude the season. Well done to all players and schools involved. Thanks to our patrons Alison Moore and Debbie White, as well as our partners the Fremantle Football Club and School Sport WA for their continued support.”
