Field Umpire Dan Johanson from the West Perth Junior Umpiring District will make his AFL debut in the Fremantle v Hawthorn Match at Optus Stadium on Monday, August 10.
Johanson was elevated to the AFL Field Umpiring list for 2020 after spending the 2019 AFL Season as a Rookie. He was also part of the AFLW Umpiring team in 2018 and 2019.
He umpired 70 senior WAFL games between 2014 and 2019, including last year's WAFL Grand Final at Optus Stadium.
WAFL & Talent Pathway Umpiring WA’s Dean Margetts congratulated Johanson on his selection after a challenging start to the season.
"It is fair to say that Dan has been more than patient this season, with all the COVID issues that presented, it meant Dan’s debut has been delayed, but to the character of the person, he hasn’t complained he has just trained hard, kept his head down and went about his business and umpired to the best of his ability in any match he was appointed to,” Margetts said.
“Dan has demonstrated all the attributes that you require to be successful at the highest level and we know Dan will embrace the moment and umpire out of his skin this coming Monday."
“This is a significant step along his umpiring journey. We are very proud, Dan’s close-knit family are proud, WA Football is proud.”
Johanson is the sixth WAFL umpire now actively umpiring on the AFL Senior list of 34.
