THE teams taking part in the finals in the Colts for 2019 might have already been set entering the final round but there was still plenty to play for and it saw wins for West Perth, Peel Thunder, Subiaco and Claremont.
The four matches were held at two venues across the two days of the weekend starting at Lathlain's Mineral Resources Park on Saturday with West Perth beating South Fremantle 12.7 (79) to 9.8 (62), and then Peel Thunder defeating Perth 10.14 (74) to 8.4 (52).
The other two matches then took place on Sunday at Leederville Oval with Subiaco beating East Perth 10.10 (70) to 9.13 (67) while Claremont then prevailed 7.12 (54) to 8.5 (53) against Swan Districts.
The Round 20 results brought an end to the 2019 home and away season with Peel Thunder the runaway leader, claiming the minor premiership with a 14-2 record to earn the week off in the opening weekend of the finals.
Claremont (11-5) was always guaranteed second position no matter what happened in the final round but the other three finishing orders were all still to be decided and it saw West Perth (9-7) finishing third, East Perth (9-7) fourth and Swan Districts (8-8) fifth.
Subiaco (8-8) only missed out on the finals by percentage in the finish and the Lions will be disappointed to not have made it because the reigning premiers had proven they would be able to do some damage against the teams in that top five.
East Fremantle (6-10), Perth (5-11) and South Fremantle (2-14) were then already well out of the finals hunt entering the last round.
The Colts qualifying final will take place on Sunday at Joondalup's HBF Arena between Claremont and West Perth while the elimination final will be between East Perth and Swan Districts at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday.
ROUND 20 SIMPLY ENERGY COLTS
WEST PERTH 12.7 (79) defeated SOUTH FREMANTLE 9.8 (62)
West Perth needed a colts victory on Saturday at Lathlain's Mineral Resources Park to try and rise to third position on the ladder and they got the job done against South Fremantle.
With little separating West Perth, East Perth and Swan Districts, the Falcons just had to take care of their own business on neutral turf at Mineral Resources Park while South Fremantle were anchored to bottom spot.
South Fremantle started impressively, though, in an attempt to finish their season on a high. The Bulldogs kicked three goals to two in the first quarter to lead by six points at quarter-time.
South Fremantle retained its control in the second quarter too with two more goals to one to head into the half-time interval leading by 11 points.
But West Perth responded coming out of half-time and kicked five goals to one in the third quarter to be on top to the tune of 11 points by three quarter-time.
The Falcons then finished the job in the last quarter with four more goals to three to end up winning 12.7 (79) to 9.8 (62).
With the way the other results went on the weekend, the win improved West Perth to third position on the colts ladder with a 9-9 record with the Falcons now taking on Claremont in a qualifying final this Sunday at Joondalup's HBF Arena.
South Fremantle's colts season sees them finish with a 2-14 record in last position on the ladder.
Cooper Blackburn kicked three goals for West Perth and Luke Reilly two.
Callum Johnson compiled 28 possessions for the Falcons, Tyron Hindmarsh 24, Rohan Scurria 21, Tom Menaglio 19, Ryan Hudson 18 and Koopah Todd 18.
Ruckman Zak Patterson finished with 13 disposals and 45 hit outs.
Liam Bradford was South Fremantle's lone multiple goal scorer kicking two.
Tyson Headland racked up 27 possessions for the Bulldogs, Manfred Kelly 25, Jack Musika 24, Nash Miller 19 (14 hit outs, seven marks), Eric Botha 19 (10 tackles) and Riley Clayton 17 (nine tackles).
PEEL THUNDER 10.14 (74) defeated PERTH 8.4 (52)
With Peel Thunder secure in top spot and Perth no chance of breaking into the top five, there was little on the line in their clash on Saturday but they still delivered an entertaining contest.
The game took place on Saturday afternoon at Lathlain's Mineral Resources Park and despite neither team able to move from where they were, it didn’t stop them having the motivation to put on an entertaining game for those in attendance.
Perth was always going to finish in second last position no matter the result, but that didn’t stop the Demons starting strongly against the minor premiers and kicking three goals to one in the opening term to lead by three points at quarter-time.
Peel did manage to take the lead by half-time but it was only by six points before the Thunder opened up a match-winning advantage with five goals to one behind in the third quarter.
That saw Peel lead by 37 points at three quarter-time and despite Perth producing an impressive final term with four goals to one, the Thunder still prevailed 10.14 (74) to 8.4 (52).
Peel finishes the season in top spot with a 14-2 record meaning they earn the break in the first week of the finals awaiting the winner of Claremont and West Perth in the following week's second semi-final.
Perth finishes its colts season in eighth position with a 5-11 record.
Tyler Nesbitt kicked three goals for Peel as did Connor Heuer while Jaxon Pitts kicked two majors.
Andrew Butler collected 24 possessions for the Thunder, Jack Sears 22, Brad Oldfield 20, James Ewing 20, Jackson Knight 17 and Jaxon Egan 15 to go with 13 tackles.
Logan McDonald kicked three goals for Perth with Hamish McFarlane and Jack Bird booting two apiece.
Simon Hayward was again tremendous for the Demons with 33 possessions, 13 tackles and a goal.
Nathan O'Driscoll also gathered 26 disposals, Bailey Smith 24, Brodie Gray 18 and Jacob Radomiljac 16.
EAST PERTH 9.13 (67) lost to SUBIACO 10.10 (70)
East Perth had the chance of securing third position for the finals and a double chance but reigning premiers Subiaco ended those hopes with a three-point victory.
The Leederville Oval co-tenants locked horns on Sunday afternoon and while Subiaco couldn’t break into the top five no matter the result, the Lions have finished the season in good form and were looking to continue that.
East Perth had it all to play for with a second chance in the finals up for grabs but the Royals blew their chances in the opening term kicking 1.7. Subiaco kicked 2.2 and despite having half the scoring shots, they held a one-point lead by quarter-time.
The Royals were a bit more accurate in the second term and kicked three goals to two from the Lions and that saw East Perth assume a five-point lead by half-time.
East Perth maintained its edge in the third quarter kicking another three goals to two and the Royals were still on top by 12 points at three quarter-time with that double chance looking to be theirs.
It wasn’t to be, though, with Subiaco dominating the last quarter kicking four goals to two and that saw the Lions win 10.10 (70) to 9.13 (67).
While Subiaco misses out on a finals spot with an 8-8 record by percentage, the way the Lions finished the season showed they could have made a real impact had they finished in the top five.
East Perth, though, missed out on a top three spot and ends up fourth at 9-7 and will take on Swan Districts in an elimination final this Saturday morning at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.
Ben Golding delivered a standout performance for Subiaco made up of 27 possessions, nine tackles, eight marks, six inside 50s and a three goals.
Daniel Frost and Jack Borchet kicked two goals each as well.
Jacob Peletier gathered 22 disposals for the Lions, Noah Ash 22, Abraham Clinch 21, Blake Morris 17, Jed Kemp 16 and Matthew Johnson 16.
Kyle Robinson kicked two goals for East Perth as did Rhai-Arn Cox.
Adam Boules compiled 27 possessions for the Royals, Harley Sparks 26, Cooper Sparks 25, Josh Hubbard 20, Liam Dellamarta 19 and Kade Dittmar 18.
CLAREMONT 7.12 (54) defeated SWAN DISTRICTS 8.5 (53)
The last colts contest for the weekend took place on Sunday afternoon at Leederville Oval and it was a thriller with the Tigers prevailing over Swans by a solitary point.
While Claremont couldn’t move from second position no matter the result of the contest, Swan Districts had the chance to end up as high as third if they were able to knock off the Tigers.
It was a tight opening quarter with two goals apiece with scores tied by quarter-time before Swan Districts were the first ones to make a break in the contest.
Swans kicked four goals to one in the second quarter and that saw them hold a commanding 17-point advantage by half-time.
Things tightened up in the third term with Claremont kicking two goals to just one from Swan Districts and that saw the Tigers close the deficit to eight points by three quarter-time.
Claremont then dominated the final quarter with the first two goals through Ben Schuhkraft and Isaiah Butters. That saw the Tigers lead by eight points with time running out.
Jak Watson had two late shots on goal for Swans and kicked a goal and behind to make it a one-point ball game, but Claremont managed to hold on for the 7.12 (54) to 8.5 (53) victory.
The result means that Claremont finishes the season in second position with an 11-5 record and will now play West Perth this Sunday in the qualifying final at HBF Arena.
Swan Districts finished the season in fifth position with an 8-8 record and will take on East Perth in an elimination final on Saturday morning at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.
Charlie Malone ended up kicking three goals for Claremont while Callum Jamieson had 20 disposals, nine marks and 24 hit outs in the ruck.
