A plethora of WA Umpires will take to the field this weekend for AFL & AFLW fixtures.
WA Umpires Dan Johanson (field), Jordan Russell (boundary) and Tiana Fry (goal) have all been appointed to the AFLW Preliminary Final between Adelaide and Geelong in Adelaide on Sunday.
Umpire WA Talent Manager Dean Margetts was thrilled to have a strong representation for the Preliminary Finals, commenting that these umpires have been working extremely hard in the lead up to AFLW and Optus WAFL competition.
"We sometimes forget that these umpires have been training since early November 2018 to prepare for the AFLW season,” he said.
“They all then umpire 20 plus rounds and finals in the WAFL competition.”
Former WA umpire (now based in Melbourne this season) Justin Power will this Sunday make his AFL debut in front of family and friends at Optus Stadium in the match between Fremantle v North Melbourne.
Margetts believes Power’s transition into the AFL system has been seamless thus far.
“Justin has settled into the AFL system with class and professionalism,” he claimed.
“Justin will be joined by 4 WA based boundary umpires along with our 2 WA based goal umpires, who will enjoy celebrating Justin’s AFL debut.”
Margetts himself will continue his 300-game career by beginning the AFL season officiating GWS v Essendon in Sydney.
Jeff Dalgleish (field) will umpire in the St Kilda v Gold Coast Suns game on Sunday.
Nathan Williamson (field) will umpire the Brisbane Lions v West Coast Eagles game on Saturday Night.
Overall WA will have 15 umpires represented, a terrific achievement by Umpiring WA.
