In another coup for the first WAFL Grand Final at Optus Stadium, major WAFL sponsor Optus today confirmed it will bring Triple J Hottest 100 winning band, The Rubens, to Perth to headline the Optus Pre-Game Show at this year’s event as part of the telco’s partnership with Universal Music.
The Rubens will kick-start the festivities before bouncedown in the League match at the McDonald’s WAFL Grand Final ahead of touring for their third studio album ‘Lo La Ru’ at the end of September.
The band was recently in Perth, having supported Pink in her massive sell-out 42-date arena show run of Australia and New Zealand.
"We are stoked to be playing at the WAFL Grand Final,” The Rubens said.
“We know the WAFL is an important part of WA sporting culture, so it's a real honour to be playing, we can't wait!”
Optus Head of Marketing Melissa Hopkins said, “Optus is a proud supporter of grassroots football in WA through our partnership with the West Australian Football Commission and we’re really excited that the biggest game on the WAFL calendar will this year be played at Optus Stadium, WA’s new home of sport and entertainment.”
“Optus is known for providing access to superior sport and entertainment content, and together with the support of our partners at Universal Music we’re thrilled to bring The Rubens to Perth and combine both into one exciting live event especially for West Australians.”
The performance by The Rubens will be complemented by the first ever True Sport community kick to kick on the ground post-match, as well as a host of exciting activations in the stadium precinct.
“With great local footy, a fantastic music act and kick-to-kick at Australia’s best stadium, the 2018 WAFL Grand Final promises to be a great day out for footy fans and families,” WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor said.
“With tickets from only $20 and kids free there’s no better way to start the school holidays.”
The Rubens are a five-piece alternative rock band originally from Menangle, New South Wales. Their debut self-titled album ‘The Rubens’ was released in 2011 and gained domestic success, reaching No. 3 on the ARIA Charts and being nominated for a J Award for Album of the Year.
In June, the band released their third studio album, ‘Lo La Ru’, which became their third to debut within the ARIA top 5. Their new single ‘Never Ever feat. Sarah’ has just achieved Gold ARIA Accreditation, and Triple J Hottest 100 #1 single ‘Hoops’ is now 3 x Platinum ARIA accredited.
