Governor Stirling Senior High School has won the inaugural Freo Dockers Schoolgirls Cup, defeating Byford Secondary College by 41 points in a high-quality Grand Final at All Saints College this week.
A dominant second half proved the difference as Governor Stirling stormed home to win 7.6 (48) to 0.7 (7).
Byford controlled the first half but were unable to take their opportunities in front of goal, registering five behinds.
Year 8 and 9 female students previously competed in a one-day lightning carnival but the decision was made this year to expand the competition to weekly fixtures with a finals series played across metropolitan districts.
WAFC Schools Specialist David Lindsay was thrilled with the success of the new format.
“We felt there was an appetite for a structured girls football competition in the junior secondary school age group and a large number of schools took up the opportunity.” he said.
“Many girls participating in the Freo Dockers Schoolgirls Cup were trying competitive football for the first time and the standard was very high across the whole competition.”
