Round 7 Colts WrapTuesday, May 22, 2018 - 12:20 PM - by Chris Pike

IT was a round of thrillers in the WAFL Colts with Peel Thunder, Claremont and East Fremantle coming away with wins by four points or fewer with South Fremantle also defeating East Perth.

The round got underway in the colts at Bendigo Bank Stadium on Saturday with Peel Thunder winning a thriller over Subiaco, prevailing 11.4 (70) to 9.12 (66).

South Fremantle scored its second win of the season at Leederville Oval defeating East Perth 10.10 (70) to 9.4 (58).

It was another nail-biter setting the tone for the day at Claremont Oval with Claremont defeating Perth 9.8 (62) to 8.12 (60).

It was also a tight affair at Joondalup Arena with East Fremantle cementing its place in the top five beating West Perth 12.9 (81) to 12.6 (78).

Perth remains on top of the colts ladder after seven rounds with a 4-2 record despite Saturday's narrow loss to Claremont.

That sees them ahead of the also 4-2 Swan Districts and Subiaco in front of East Fremantle (4-3) and Peel Thunder (3-3).

West Perth (3-4) is just outside the top five in front of Claremont (3-3), South Fremantle (2-4) and East Perth (1-5).

Colts Young Guns for Round 7

PEEL THUNDER v SUBIACO

Subiaco was looking to return to the top of the WAFL colts ladder and started strongly against Peel at Bendigo Bank Stadium on Saturday, but the Thunder kicked seven goals to one in the second half to claim the four-point victory.

Subiaco had started the colts season winning its opening four matches before a Round 6 loss to West Perth. That had the Lions looking to bounce back on Saturday with a win to return them to a game clear on top of the ladder as well.

Subiaco looked on track to do just that kicking four goals to one in the first quarter and then another four to three in the second term to go into half-time leading by 29 points.

But Peel came out a different outfit following the break and kicked five goals to one in the third quarter, and two to nil in the last to end up prevailing 11.4 (70) to 9.12 (66).

Lachlan Cullen kicked three goals for Peel, Jaxon Egan two and Jack Sears two.

Lachlan Riley gathered 23 possessions for the Thunder, Andrew Butler 23, Jake Howes 21 (seven tackles) and James Sturrock 16.

Jack Mayo kicked four goals for Subiaco to go with 11 kicks, seven marks and 11 hit outs. Samuel Di Francesco also kicked two goals from three kicks.

Tristan Hobley racked up 26 disposals, Zane Shellabear Healey 23, Jacob Peletier 23, Liam Hickmott 17 and Kyle Stainsby 17 to go with 11 tackles.

EAST PERTH v SOUTH FREMANTLE

Little separated East Perth and South Fremantle in the colts contest at Leederville Oval on Saturday with both teams having won just one game coming into it, but the Bulldogs did enough to prevail by 12 points.

East Perth and South Fremantle had both just won once so far in 2018 meaning the stakes were high on Leederville Oval on Saturday.

The Bulldogs led by just a point at quarter-time but then kicked four goals to three in the second term to lead by 11 points at half-time.

South Fremantle then kicked away with three goals to one in the third quarter to be up by 23 points at the last change before holding on to win the game 10.10 (70) to 9.4 (58).

Tom Weston kicked three goals for South Fremantle, Zaine Atwell two and Eric Botha two.

Tom Blechynden racked up 23 possessions for the Bulldogs, Manfred Kelly 23, Matthew Ward 21, Toby McQuilkin 20, James Russell 18 and Enrique Aiken-Featherstone 16.

Jack Fenton also had 10 touches and 25 hit outs in the ruck.

WEST PERTH v EAST FREMANTLE

It was a tight contest for four quarters at Joondalup Arena on Saturday but East Fremantle kicked four goals to two in the last term to come away with a three-point victory.

East Fremantle started strongly with four goals to two in the first quarter but West Perth responded with four goals to two themselves in the second term to trail by just three points at half-time.

The Falcons continued with that momentum in the third quarter kicking four goals to two to be on top to the tune of nine points at three quarter-time.

But it was the Sharks who finished the stronger with four goals to two in the last term to end up beating the Falcons 12.9 (81) to 12.6 (78).

Mitch Anderson kicked three goals for East Fremantle, Ethan Brown two and Jai Jackson two.

Corey Robinson amassed 29 possessions for the Sharks, Josh Ritchie 25, Tom Monaghan 19, Cody Smith 19 and Nick Watson 17 to go with seven marks and 21 hit outs.

Jack Burke, Lachlan Scurria and Callum Johnson kicked two goals apiece for West Perth.

Nathan Murray had a big performance for the Falcons racking up 34 possessions with Tyron Hindmarsh gathering 23 disposals, Alec Johnson 22, Daniel Rowe 22, Eamon Gilbert 21 (13 hit outs, six tackles), Filimone Muavou 21, Ben Johnson 20 and Noah Clune 19.

CLAREMONT v PERTH

Claremont is the undoubted colts powerhouse and showed they can't be overlooked in 2018 again with a thrilling two-point victory against the ladder-leading Perth at Claremont Oval on Saturday.

Claremont has played in the previous five WAFL colts grand finals and despite winning just two of its opening five games of 2018, the Tigers put in an impressive performance on Saturday against the Perth side that remains on top of the ladder.

The Tigers started strongly with four goals to one in the first quarter and they were still on top by 17 points at half-time.

Perth did hit back in the third quarter with three goals to one and that set the stage for a tight finish with Claremont holding on to win 9.8 (62) to 8.12 (60).

Max Grant gathered 25 possessions for the Tigers, Jack Monaghan 22, Nathan Pearce 19, Jacob Dorsett-Sawyer 19, Lachlan Southern 18, Josh Robbins 17, Oliver Henderson 17, Corey Hitchcock 17 and Angus Longmire 14 to go with 34 hit outs.

Alan Narkle kicked four goals for Perth from eight kicks and four tackles.

Zac Casey compiled 31 possessions (eight tackles, six marks) for the Demons, Maverick Hamilton 24, Bailey Smith 21, Austin Davis 18 and Blake Little 17.
