THE worst weather conditions of the WAFL season to date greeted the teams involved in Round 15 action on Saturday with Subiaco making it 12 straight, Peel Thunder three straight, Swan Districts two in-a-row and East Perth winning big to stay in the finals hunt.
Wet, cold and windy conditions might have limited the goal scoring and free-flowing play across the four matches on Saturday in Round 15 of the 2017 season, but it certainly didn’t minimise the drama, competitiveness or intrigue with three of the games going right down to the wire.
West Perth hosted its annual International Football Festival at HBF Arena with the terrible weather conditions meaning the crowd that has regularly turned out for the event was kept away, but the Falcons and Subiaco still put in another tough and bruising affair.
In the end, Subiaco held off West Perth to win 6.11 (47) to 4.12 (36) with the Lions having now won 12 straight matches to remain clear on top of the WAFL ladder. The Falcons have suffered three consecutive defeats but do still sit in fifth position.
Peel Thunder and Claremont locked horns at Bendigo Bank Stadium with both teams on winning streaks, and it was a game that went right down to the wire. Peel was on top most of the afternoon but Claremont kicked three goals to nil in the third term to make things interesting.
Scores were tied with time running out but Peel had the last two scoring shots, both being behinds, and the reigning premiers ended up winning 8.5 (53) to 6.15 (51).
The Thunder have now won three straight in third position while the Tigers remaining outside the top five with their three-game winning streak coming to an end.
The blowout of the day took place at Leederville Oval with East Perth returning to the winner's list beating East Fremantle 16.7 (103) to 6.6 (42) on the back of dominant performances from ruckmen Scott Lycett and Jonathan Giles who combined for an incredible 122 hit outs.
Perth once again started strongly and led Swan Districts at one stage by 33 points at Lathlain Park. But Swans had too much class and experience in the finish, and too much to play for to end up winning 11.7 (73) to 9.12 (66) to remain in fourth position.
The second placed South Fremantle had the bye.
