More than 120 junior umpires got the opportunity to hear from AFL Umpire and West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) Umpire Development Manager Dean Margetts about the importance of game management at a recent umpire training session.

The session was delivered by the West Australian Football Commission in partnership with Claremont, Subiaco and West Perth Junior Football Leagues with the aim to upskill local junior umpires and ensure there is consistency in game management at a community football level.

Margetts shared his knowledge and experience of umpiring AFL and reiterated the importance of applying the laws of the game to ensure a match of football is played in a safe and fair environment.

Margetts showed the group vision of dangerous tackles and workshopped game management strategies on how to identify and manage tackles of this nature.

WAFC Community Development Manager Andrew Ridley said the workshop was a great success and believed every junior umpire got something valuable out of it.

“Dean Margetts is a great role model and mentor for our junior umpires aspiring to make it to the AFL level,” Ridley said.

“He provided important information on how to best manage a football game to ensure it is a safe and positive experience for all involved.

“In addition to the work we are doing with umpires to improve the game-day experience for our football participants, we are also delivering a six-week coach education program across all districts and regions, which involves workshops at every local junior football club.”
