South Fremantle and Perth will play in Carnarvon this weekend as part of the State Government’s Country Sports Enrichment Scheme (CSES).

The Round 20 game on Saturday August 6 will kick off at 1.30pm at Carnarvon Festive Grounds and be hosted by the Gascoyne Football Association.

The game will be the second WAFL fixture played in the coastal town 900km north of Perth. The previous game on June 23, 2007 saw West Perth 7.15 (57) defeat South Fremantle 8.7 (55).

WAFL General Manager Steve Hargrave said the WAFL was committed to continuing games in regional areas as part of the CSES and thanked the Department of Sport and Recreation, State Government and Sports Minister Mia Davies for their outstanding support.

“With their support, we can provide a great opportunity for regional fans to see a WAFL game in their own backyard,” Hargrave said.

“Footy is the life blood of many country communities and the WAFL is committed to continuing its support of country football to ensure it remains vibrant and healthy for many years to come.

“It is also a great opportunity for our WAFL clubs to continue connecting with their regions. Country WA has a proud history of developing some of the game’s top talent  and we must keep engaging with these communities.”

There have been 52 WAFL games played with CSES funding since the scheme commenced in 1999 and over $1.2million contributed to the program during that time.

Overall, 70 WAFL games have been played in country WA since 1984, providing 21 years of consecutive service to regional WA.
