SOME terribly wet and cold weather greeted WAFL NAIDOC Round on Saturday and the result was some upset victories with Claremont and Perth beating the top two teams while West Perth moved closer to a top two spot and East Perth entered the top five.
Cold weather and at times torrential rain certainly didn’t lead to much attacking and attractive football across the four games, but it meant that tough, determined and efficient football was the order of the day and it was Perth, West Perth, Claremont and East Perth who ran out victorious.
Perth won its third straight match on the back of a tremendously hard-nosed performance beating the league-leading Subiaco 6.6 (42) to 4.3 (27) at Lathlain Park.
The second last placed Claremont also caused an upset beating the second placed South Fremantle 11.3 (69) to 5.8 (38) at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.
West Perth made it nine wins from its last 10 matches kicking the last eight goals of the game to defeat Peel Thunder 8.7 (55) to 1.5 (11) at Bendigo Bank Stadium.
East Perth then replaced Peel in the top five by winning a third straight match beating Swan Districts 8.10 (58) to 2.6 (18) at Steel Blue Oval.
The only game of the round featuring two teams inside the top five took place at Bendigo Bank Stadium, but by the end of the day West Perth was just percentage off second spot while Peel fell out of the top five altogether.
The Thunder started well with the opening goal of the game and the only major of the first quarter, but it was all the Falcons after that. West Perth kicked the only two goals of the second quarter, the only four of the third and only two of the last to win by 44 points.
West Perth has improved to a 10-5 record to be just percentage behind the 10-4 South Fremantle with the Falcons a chance to move up into second next Saturday with a win over East Perth with the Bulldogs having the bye.
West Perth did lose Luke Meadows and Aidan Lynch coming into the game with Kody Manning, Nick Rodda, Trent Manzone and Matt Guadagnin still missing, but it didn’t hinder the Falcons.
Max Duffy continued his good form up forward with two goals against his former team as the only multiple goal kicker in the game.
Shane Nelson racked up another 33 possessions for West Perth with Aaron Black gathering 32 disposals, Blake Wilhelm 29, Tyler Keitel 26, Rohan Kerr 25, Jay van Berlo 25, Joel Leeson 22, Steven Browne 19, Drew Rohde 19, Kris Shannon 19 and Steve Potente 19.
Chris Keunen also worked hard in the ruck for 17 possessions and 17 hit outs.
Brett Milward was Peel's lone goal scorer with the 18-year-old making his league debut.
Veteran Rory O'Brien worked hard for 30 possessions while Josh Deluca gathered 26 disposals for the Thunder, Matt De Boer 24, Ethan Hughes 24, Brayden Lawler 20 and Zac Clarke 16 to go with 59 hit outs in the ruck.
South Fremantle and Claremont were the initiators of the NAIDOC Round concept first playing one another back in 2007 starting what is now an annual tradition. It is one that has also been dominated by the Tigers who have now won nine of the 10 NAIDOC Week clashes over the Bulldogs.
Claremont started on fire despite the difficult conditions at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with six goals to two behinds in the first quarter. The rain pelted down in the second quarter but again Claremont managed the only goal of the term.
South Fremantle rallied during the third term with its first four goals of the match, with the first courtesy of debutant Tyson Pickett, but Claremont had all the answers emphasised by two goals in the final minute of the third quarter to Beau Maister and Ian Richardson.
The Tigers went on to win by 31 points to end their three-game losing run and notch their fourth win of 2016.
Maister had a tremendous day up forward for Claremont kicking three goals from 15 possessions and five marks while Gerrick Weedon kicked the first two goals of the game and Richardson added two.
Ryan Lim delivered a tremendous display through the middle with 31 possessions with Jye Bolton gathering 30 disposals to go with 12 tackles. Jake Murphy picked up 24 touches and laid tackles with Keifer Yu finishing with 18 possessions and a goal.
Claremont's back-line led by Haydn Busher, Anton Hamp and Dylan Ross performed strongly as well.
South Fremantle lost Brock Higgins on the morning of the game with Josh Pullman, Ashton Hams, Haiden Schloithe and Adam McIntosh already sidelined, but ultimately there were no excuses for the Bulldogs and the game could end up costing them a top two finish.
Ben Saunders kicked two goals for South Fremantle while Shane Hockey finished with 31 possessions and 12 tackles.
Jacob Dragovich gathered 28 disposals, Shaun Bewick 26, Brendan Verrier 25, Jacob Martinez 25 and Tim Kelly 22. Zac Strom carried the ruck in the absence of Higgins and worked hard against both Mitch Andrews and Darcy Cameron for 24 disposals and 19 hit outs.
Perth has now won three straight matches for the first time since the opening three rounds of 2013 after a strong performance to lead all day and beat Subiaco by 15 points.
The Demons remain two games out of the top five and the Lions stay on top of the ladder, but it snaps Subiaco's seven-game winning run over Perth.
Brennan Stack and Laine Wilkins kicked two goals apiece for Perth to combine for four of their team's six goals.
Clint Jones gathered 26 possessions for Perth with Julian Jacobs finishing with 23 disposals, Brett Wolfenden 19 and Liam McKenna 18 to go with 11 tackles.
With ruckman Angus Graham still out injured, the undersized Todd Stevenson again took up the task to great effect with 21 possessions, six tackles and 40 hit outs.
Jeremy Woodley, Brett Mahoney, Brett Robinson and Liam Ryan combined for Subiaco's four goals while Chris Phelan finished with 32 possessions and 12 tackles.
East Perth kicked the first five goals of the game against Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval on the way to the 40-point victory with the black-and-whites not kicking their first of two goals until the opening minutes of the final quarter.
The Royals had wrapped up their third straight win by that point and with Peel losing to West Perth they move up into fifth position on the ladder.
Craig Wulff kicked three goals for East Perth with Simon Tunbridge adding two.
Jack Redden racked up another 34 possessions for the Royals, Malcolm Karpany 23, Corey Adamson 23, Tom Cole 22, Tom Lamb 20, Kurt Mutimer 19 and Dom Sheed 18.
Paul Johnson was terrific in the ruck finishing with 21 possessions, eight tackles, 31 hit outs and a goal.
Swan Districts' two goals came courtesy of Rudy Riddoch and Matt Riggio.
Riggio also racked up 34 possessions and 10 tackles for the day with Tony Notte collecting 32 disposals, Adam Faulkner 24, Todd Banfield 21 and Freddie Clutterbuck 19 in his second game against his old side.
