EAST Fremantle and West Perth kept its hopes of a top two position well and truly alive with big WA Day wins in the traditional derbies on Monday while Perth showed signs of improvement also defeating Swan Districts.
After Peel Thunder opened the round by beating Subiaco by four points on Sunday at Domain Stadium, it was time for WA Day WAFL action on the Monday public holiday.
The most traditional of all WAFL matches is the Foundation Derby and this year's edition took place in front of more than 5000 fans at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with East Fremantle defeating South Fremantle 13.12 (90) to 6.15 (51).
West Perth scored a sixth straight victory proving too good for East Perth in the Perth derby at HBF Arena with the Falcons beating the Royals 11.9 (75) to 5.14 (44) in front of more than 3000 fans.
The third clash of the day was the least traditional of the WA Day clashes with Perth inflicting more pain on the bottom placed Swan Districts, winning 11.20 (86) to 4.8 (32) at Steel Blue Oval.
The Foundation Derby at Fremantle Community Bank Oval again attracted a crowd of more than 5000 despite the inclement weather, and the East Fremantle fans that turned out left happy with the Sharks beating the top of the ladder Bulldogs by 39 points.
South Fremantle started well kicking the first two goals of the game before East Fremantle kicked the next three and led by two points at quarter-time.
Three goals either side of half-time to Jack Perham saw the Sharks assume control. They would go on to kick 10 consecutive goals in the game from the five-minute of the second quarter until the 21-minute mark of the final term.
East Fremantle led by as much as 46 points after Brett Peake snapped a mercurial goal midway through the last term before South Fremantle ended a goal drought that lasted more than two whole quarters.
The win sees East Fremantle remain in third position at 7-4 to be just one game behind the second placed Subiaco with the two teams to play following the state game. South Fremantle remains on top despite the loss at 8-2 but is only percentage ahead of Subiaco.
Jack Perham was outstanding for East Fremantle from centre half-forward finishing with 18 possessions, eight marks and three goals. Peake also kicked three goals for the Sharks, Matthew Watson two and Jamie McNamara two.
Tim Bristow gathered 24 possessions on the wing with Liam Anthony also having 23 touches and Mitch Boyle 23.
The Sharks' back-line was terrific with Matthew Jupp holding Ben Saunders goalless with Josh Cuneo, Sam Read, Dylan Winton, Andrew Stephen providing strong support.
Jesse Crichton sacrificed his game to shut down Ashton Hams and did it well holding him to 11 touches while having just three himself.
Mason Shaw kicked two goals for South Fremantle with Shane Hockey compiling 27 possessions, Tim Kelly 26, Ryan Cook 23, Blayne Wilson 21, Marlion Pickett 20 and Adam McIntosh 20.
East Perth thumped West Perth in their opening clash of 2016 but the Falcons have not lost since then and continued that run on WA Day with a 31-point victory over the Royals.
West Perth now sits on a 7-4 record to be three games clear of the 4-7 East Perth and to be within striking distance of a top two position.
West Perth started quickly with the game's opening three goals and all came to midfielders Aaron Black, Rohan Kerr and Aidan Lynch before East Perth got on the board through Fraser McInnes.
Two goals to Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls in the second quarter kept East Perth within seven points at half-time, but the Falcons kicked away with the only three goals of the third term, and then the first goal of the last to set up the eventual 31-point win.
Michael Lourey kicked all three of West Perth's last quarter goals to finish with four for the match with Aidan Lynch also booting three to go with 23 possessions.
Shane Nelson continued his remarkable form since coming into the West Perth team racking up 42 possessions while Trent Manzone finished with 32 disposals, Aaron Black 27, Rohan Kerr 22, Blake Wilhelm 23, Drew Rohde 22 and Luke Meadows.
Dean Munns did well shutting down prolific East Perth midfielder Kane Lucas and holding him to five disposals for the game.
Tyler Keitel was outstanding controlling the game from down back ending up with 29 disposals and 14 marks.
Oakley-Nicholls kicked two goals for East Perth with Fraser McInnes trying hard up forward with 19 touches, seven marks and a goal.
Patrick McGinnity was among the Royals players to deliver a four-quarter performance with 30 possessions, nine inside 50s, seven marks and four tackles. Jackson Nelson also had 27 disposals for East Perth, Mitch Fraser 22, Tom Gorter 18 and debutant Kurt Mutimer 18.
Tom Barrass battled hard in defence and had 16 touches and seven marks for the game while kicking a goal when shifted forward late.
And at Steel Blue Oval, Perth proved far too good for Swan Districts kicking eight goals to one in the second half. While the Demons' winning margin of 54 points was significant, it could have been so much more had it not been for 14 behinds in the second half as well.
Perth now has won three games this season after winning just two in all of 2015. Swan Districts is anchored to the bottom of the ladder with one win in 11 attempts.
Once again Perth's midfield racked up winning the ball led by the prolific Clint Jones who had 35 possessions to go with 12 tackles. Aidan Tropiano also had 28 disposals, Liam McKenna 28, Michael Sinclair 23 and Brett Wolfenden 19.
Angus Graham dominated the ruck with 58 hit outs but Swan Districts went up against him without a genuine ruckman.
The Demons' found plenty avenues to goal with Matt Thompson, Sam Garstone, Rowan Brookes, Taran Etto and captain Dene White all kicking two majors apiece.
Matthew Rogers kicked two goals for Swan Districts against his old team with Adam Faulkner collecting 31 possessions, Freddie Clutterbuck 26, Matt Riggio 25, Jesse Turner 22, Todd Banfield 19 and Justin Simpson 19.
