The decision follows the cancellation of the Subiaco and Peel Thunder Reserves game earlier today. Both Reserves teams will receive two premiership points under the WAFL’s rules and regulations for a cancelled match.
A final assessment of the Medibank Stadium playing surface by WAFC turf experts today concluded it presented a risk to players. Re-turfing work was carried out in the centre square by turf contractors during the week and affected by overnight rain.
WAFL General Manager Steve Hargrave said it was crucial the playing surface met the minimum standards required for players competing in the premier State League competition.
“The turf contractor has been at the ground today undertaking further remedial works to improve the condition of the turf,” he said.
“Whilst trying to provide every opportunity to ensure the game went ahead, unfortunately the turf does not currently meet the standards required for a safe playing surface and contractors will need to continue restoration work to ensure it does for future matches.
“As a competition we are extremely disappointed that this is the second time in 2016 that a WAFL venue prepared by an external turf contractor has not been delivered to a safe standard, which significantly affects each of the WAFL Clubs involved and has a significant financial impact on the home WAFL team.
“We will be undertaking a review on all the turf contracts associated with each WAFL venue to ensure this situation does not occur again.
“The WAFL apologises for any inconvenience to fans, players and other stakeholders but must ensure the welfare of our players is at the forefront of our decisions.”
