Four WA players from the North West Academy have been selected to play with the Northern Territory at the AFL National 16s Championships after starring at the Northern Australia Cup in Darwin from May 26 to 29.
Chase Rye (Swan Districts/Karratha), Jarrod Cameron (Swan Districts/Newman/Aquinas College), Elijah Murray (Claremont/Fitzroy Crossing/Clontarf College) and Kane Edwards (Swan Districts/South Hedland) were all chosen in the final travelling party of 30 players to play at the National 16s Championships.
All four players represented Western Australia’s North West Academy in two matches against the Northern Territory State 16s Academy at TIO Stadium on Friday, May 26 and Saturday, May 27.
The Northern Territory won both games, the first 10.5 (65) to 3.6 (24) and the second 13.15 (83) to 5.8 (38) however WA North West was far more competitive than the scoreline reflected.
West Australian Football Commission Talent Programs Coordinator Clayton Anderson congratulated the four players on their selection for the National 16s Championships and said it was a great opportunity for members of the North West Academy, which was first established in 2012 to cater for talented 15-17 year old players from the Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne regions. .
“This academy provides opportunities for players to be part of the talent pathway, have the opportunity to be coached by high profile coaches, and be exposed to educational programs provided by the WAFC and the AFL,” he said.
“Some of the recent Academy graduates have included Adelaide Crows player Charlie Cameron, current State 18s player Sam Petrevski-Seton, Swan Districts player Braydon Hackett and State 16s Academy member Graydon Wilson.”
