PLAYER OF THE WEEK – GEORGE HAMPSON
George Hampson sent a stark reminder to Subiaco on just how good he can be with a best on ground performance in East Fremantle's 80-point thumping of the two-time reigning premiers.
After winning Subiaco's 2013 fairest and best award, and then being a key player in 2014 premiership when he kicked four goals in the grand final win over East Perth despite injuring a hamstring, Hampson made the move to East Fremantle in 2015.
He started the season strongly with the Sharks before injuring a knee and requiring a reconstruction that ended his year prematurely.
On return, he had a bit of a slow start to this season this year but in recent weeks has been back in outstanding form and it all came together on Saturday at Medibank Stadium.
Hampson delivered 26 possessions, eight inside-50 entries, five marks and two goals as he split his time in the midfield and up forward to great effect.
THE SHINING LIGHTS
East Fremantle built some confidence last week beating East Perth at Medibank Stadium and returned to the Leederville venue six days later to hand Subiaco an 80-point thumping.
Not only is the loss Subiaco's first since Round 20 last year, but it is the Lions' biggest defeat since losing to Claremont by 101 points in Round 23, 2012. The 80-point margin is East Fremantle's biggest in a win over Subiaco since the Sharks won by 96 points in Round 20, 1994.
George Hampson starred for East Fremantle against his former side with two goals along with 26 possessions and eight inside 50s, but the Sharks had plenty more outstanding performers.
Ben Sokol and Hamish Shepheard had combined for 10 goals for Subiaco the previous week against South Fremantle, but both were held goalless on Saturday thanks to Sam Read and Dylan Winton respectively.
Ryan Lester-Smith continued his tremendous form providing drive off half-back with another 28 possessions and 11 marks while Brock O'Brien was also important with 22 disposals and seven marks off half-back.
East Fremantle also dominated through the midfield with James Bristow (12 touches, 17 marks, 40 hit outs, one goal) and Matthew Watson (16 disposals, seven marks, 17 hit outs) doing well sharing the ruck duties with the other resting in the forward-line.
Liam Anthony racked up another 35 possessions and seven tackles for the Sharks with Dion Anthony compiling 26 disposals and seven tackles, Sean Henson 20 disposals and Cameron Eardley 19.
Then up forward, Brett Peake maintained his lead in the race for the Bernie Naylor with three goals from 18 possessions with Josh Simpson also kicking three majors to go with 20 disposals.
It was a day to forget for Subiaco but a shining light was debutant small forward Liam Ryan who kicked two of the Lions' six goals for the day.
Captain Kyal Horsley worked hard for 27 possessions and seven inside-50 entries with Adam Cockie collecting 21 disposals and six tackles, Brett Robinson 20 touches, Greg Broughton 19, Chris Phelan 19 and Wayde Twomey 19.
Lachlan Delahunty battled hard again in the ruck finishing with 21 possessions and 20 hit outs for Subiaco.
South Fremantle's come from behind win over Claremont at the Showground was all the more impressive for South Fremantle considering full-back Josh Pullman and Ben Saunders both missed through ankle and knee injuries respectively.
In the absence of Pullman, Brad McPhail made his league debut in defence and with support from Blayne Wilson, Marlion Pickett and Adam McIntosh helped to restrict Darcy Cameron, Beau Maister and Haydn Busher to a combined four goals.
Then without Saunders in the forward-line, Blaine Johnson stepped up for his best game of the season with three goals from 19 possessions and seven marks with Mason Shaw also booting three majors from 16 disposals and six marks.
Captain Ryan Cook also delivered his best game of the season in his 99th appearance for the Bulldogs finishing with 30 possessions, nine inside-50 entries, seven tackles and the two last quarter goals.
Shane Hockey continued his strong form in the midfield for South Fremantle with another 28 possessions with Tim Stewart playing his first game of the season and collecting 23 disposals.
Big man Brock Higgins also played his first game of 2016 after a calf injury and three weeks in the reserves, and did well with 21 touches, four marks and 21 hit outs.
McIntosh also collected 20 disposals, nine marks and five tackles for South Fremantle while Ashton Hams collected 19 disposals of which 17 came in the second half as he shook the tag from Claremont's Hugo Breakey.
Jack Bradshaw played his best game of the season for Claremont. Having kicked just two goals in the opening six games, the small forward came to life on Saturday at the Showground booting five majors from 21 possessions and nine marks.
Darcy Cameron again provided a good marking target kicking two goals from 12 possessions and five marks while also helping Mitch Andrews in the ruck with 17 hit outs. Andrews worked hard for 16 touches and 30 hit outs.
Jye Bolton responded to being held to 10 disposals against West Perth in Kulin by being back to his prolific ball-winning best on Saturday with 34 possessions in Claremont's midfield.
Tom Ledger also gathered 22 disposals for the Tigers, Ryan Neates 21, Ryan Lim 20 and Jake Murphy 18.
West Perth's back-line not only did well to keep Peel to five goals for the game, but also racked up plenty of the ball and set up play tremendously for the Falcons.
Tyler Keitel led the way not only limiting Tanner Smith to just six kicks, one mark and two goals, but racking up 32 possessions and 10 marks himself in a tremendous display from the 20-year-old.
He had plenty of help in the back-line with Luke Meadows continuing his career-best form with another 30 disposals and a goal while Drew Rohde finished with 25 touches, Steven Browne 21, Nick Rodda 18 and Blake Wilhelm 17.
Seva Mozhaev did a strong job in the ruck for West Perth up against AFL pair Zac Clarke and Jack Hannath. He finished with nine possessions and 25 hit outs himself but more importantly nullified the impact of Clarke and Hannath.
Shane Nelson racked up another 29 possessions and six tackles in the midfield for West Perth while Aaron Black gathered 25 touches and took seven marks with Rohan Kerr working hard for 32 disposals and eight marks.
Trent Manzone also had 20 possessions for West Perth, Jay van Berlo 20 and Steve Potente 19.
Andrew Strijk and Kody Manning kicked two goals each for the Falcons with Manning finishing with 16 possessions and seven tackles as well.
Peel might have only kicked five goals for the day in the tough conditions at HBF Arena, but there were plenty of impressive performances both from their WAFL and AFL-listed players.
Tanner Smith fought hard in attack to kick two of the Thunder's five goals of the afternoon.
Down back, Ryan Nyhuis did a good job holding former Dockers and Thunder player Max Duffy to just the two behinds and seven kicks with Sam Collins also restricting Michael Lourey to one goal and five kicks.
Anthony Morabito did well also at centre half-back with 19 possessions while shutting down Mark Hamilton before the injury-plagued Docker hurt a hamstring late in the game.
Clancee Pearce did his chances of returning to Fremantle's line-up no harm by racking up 35 possessions with Ed Langdon amassing 30 disposals, Brad Walsh 26, Darcy Tucker 21, Rory O'Brien 20, Brady Grey 19 and Brayden Lawler 18.
Perth climbed off the bottom of the ladder and might have taken a significant step towards avoid a third straight wooden spoon beating Swan Districts by 41 points at Lathlain Park.
The win is just the fourth for the Demons in their last 41 games but it was impressive over the struggling and undermanned Swans with the midfield particularly dominant.
Angus Graham led the way in the ruck for Perth with 18 possessions, six marks, 44 hit outs and two goals.
Then at ground level, Clint Jones delivered a monster performance with 47 possessions, seven marks, four tackles and three inside-50 entries while Julian Jacobs racked up 36 disposals, 14 marks and nine inside-50 entries.
Both Jones and Jacobs kicked their first goals of the season as well. In Jones' case, it was his first WAFL goal since Round 15, 2006 and for Jacobs, his first since Round 24, 2013.
Liam McKenna was another standout performer for the Demons with 32 possessions and a goal while Sandover Medallist Aidan Tropiano had 29 touches, nine marks and seven tackles.
Teenager Zac Fisher was terrific again with 27 possessions and a goal with Jared Bell finishing with 19 disposals, Brent Latch 19, Kristian Cary 18, Lennon Marlin 18, Brett Edmonds 17, Laine Wilkins 17, Michael Sinclair 17 and Callum Walley 17.
Sam Garstone gave Perth a marking target in attack and he kicked three goals with Cary, Walley and Graham all booting two apiece.
It was another tough day for Swan Districts with Aaron Elari, Kirk Ugle, Ricky Cary, Jake Nuich, Murray Newman and Nathan Blakely among the players absent who coach Greg Harding was looking to for big seasons in 2016.
Freddie Clutterbuck worked hard for 31 possessions with Matt Riggio picking up 31 disposals, Adam Faulkner 29, Jesse Turner 21, Graham Jetta 21, and second-gamer Griffen Logue 18 to go with eight hit outs and seven marks.
