EAST Fremantle pulled off the shock of the WAFL season on Saturday not just by beating Subiaco but by doing so by 80 points while South Fremantle stormed home to beat Claremont and West Perth and Perth scored strong victories.
Subiaco had won its last 11 matches and not lost since Round 20 last year, but that all changed dramatically on Saturday at Medibank Stadium with East Fremantle delivering an 18.12 (120) to 6.4 (40) victory.
West Perth won a third straight match defeating Peel Thunder 8.10 (58) to 5.11 (41) with South Fremantle coming back from trailing by 25 points early in the last quarter to beat Claremont 12.13 (85) to 12.5 (77) at the Claremont Showground.
The final match of One Life Round was between the bottom two teams who had just the one win apiece for the season going into the clash at Lathlain Park, and Perth took out a 14.11 (95) to 8.6 (54) victory.
The surprise of the WAFL season took place at Medibank Stadium when Subiaco suffered its first loss and East Fremantle scored a second win at Medibank Stadium inside six days. The Sharks backed up an impressive 37-point win over East Perth with a dominant 80-point thumping of the Lions.
Not only is the loss Subiaco's first since Round 20 last year, but it is the Lions' biggest defeat since losing to Claremont by 101 points in Round 23, 2012. The 80-point margin is East Fremantle's biggest in a win over Subiaco since the Sharks won by 96 points in Round 20, 1994.
East Fremantle dominated Subiaco from the outset with the first five goals of the game before going on to lead by 33 points at quarter-time, 38 points at half-time, 59 points at three quarter-time 80 points at the final siren.
It was Subiaco's 2013 fairest and best winner and 2014 premiership player George Hampson that set the tone for East Fremantle finishing with 26 possessions, eight inside 50s and two goals, but he had plenty of support.
Brett Peake continued his strong return season to the WAFL with another three goals for the Sharks with Jesse Crichton booting two majors and Josh Simpson three to go with 20 possessions.
Liam Anthony racked up 35 possessions and seven tackles for East Fremantle, Ryan Lester-Smith 28 touches and 11 marks, Dion Anthony 26 disposals and seven tackles, Jack Perham 23 possessions and seven marks, and Brock O'Brien 22 touches and seven marks.
There were plenty more strong contributors for the Sharks with Tim Bristow finishing with 20 possessions and eight marks, Sean Henson 20 disposals and Cameron Eardley 19 touches.
East Fremantle's back-line was particularly impressive led by Andrew Stephen, Lester-Smith, Dylan Winton, Sam Read and Josh Cuneo as they kept Subiaco forwards Clancy Wheeler, Ben Sokol and Hamish Shepheard all goalless.
Liam Ryan was a positive for Subiaco from the defeat kicking two goals on debut while Lachlan Delahunty had 21 possessions and 20 hit outs in the ruck. Kyal Horsley collected 27 disposals, Adam Cockie 21, Brett Robinson 20, Greg Broughton 19, Chris Phelan 19 and Wayde Twomey 18.
Claremont finally got a chance to play its first home game of the season at the Claremont Showground and despite South Fremantle kicking the first two goals, the Tigers soon took control.
Claremont kicked the game's next four goals and then by the time Jack Bradshaw kicked his fifth goal two minutes into the last quarter, the Tigers appeared on track for their third win of the season leading by 25 points.
However, Claremont has struggled in last quarters dating back to 2015 and now so far in 2016, and that trend came back to bite the Tigers again with South Fremantle putting on a blistering last 20 minutes of the game.
Mason Shaw booted his second and third goals, Steven Edwards added another against his old club and captain Ryan Cook booted two last quarter goals including the match-winner at the 28-minute mark as the Bulldogs won by eight points to return to the top of the WAFL ladder.
Along with Shaw kicking three goals and Cook two for South Fremantle, Blaine Johnson booted three majors to go with 19 possessions and seven marks.
Cook played his best game of the season for South Fremantle not only with the two goals but also 30 possessions, nine inside 50s and seven marks.
Shane Hockey continued his strong form with another 28 possessions while Brock Higgins played his first game of the season and was impressive with 21 disposals and 21 hit outs.
Tim Stewart also played his first game of 2016 and gathered 23 disposals with Adam McIntosh also having 20 touches and eight marks and Ashton Hams 19 disposals of which 17 came in the second half as broke free of the close tag of Hugo Breakey.
Bradshaw kicked five goals from 21 possessions and nine marks for Claremont with Darcy Cameron also booting two majors.
Jye Bolton racked up 34 possessions for the Tigers, Tom Ledger 22, Ryan Neates 21, Ryan Lim 20 and Jake Murphy 18.
West Perth returned to HBF Arena for its first home game since Round 3 and took out a hard fought 17-point victory in tough conditions.
The Falcons have now won three straight matches to head into next week's bye on a 4-4 record.
Little separated the two teams all afternoon in the low-scoring affair but Peel did take a two-point advantage into the final quarter.
However, West Perth was finishing with the advantage of the strong breeze and made the most of it with the opening three goals of the last term thanks to premiership stars Kody Manning, Andrew Strijk and Steven Browne to set up the win.
West Perth set up their performance from the back-line with Tyler Keitel racking up 32 possessions and 10 marks, Luke Meadows 30 disposals, Drew Rohde 25 touches, Steven Browne 21 possessions, Nick Rodda 18 disposals and Blake Wilhelm 17 touches.
Through the middle, Seva Mozhaev worked hard for nine touches and 25 hit outs against AFL big men Jack Hannath (10 touches, 14 hit outs) and Zac Clarke (11 disposals, 33 hit outs) while Shane Nelson had another 29 possessions, Aaron Black 25, Jay van Berlo 20 and Trent Manzone 20.
Manning and Strijk both kicked two goals to make the most of their opportunities in the forward half.
Tanner Smith kicked two goals from limited opportunities for Peel while down back Sam Collins did well holding Michael Lourey to one goal and Ryan Nyhuis limited Max Duffy to two behinds and seven kicks.
Peel had some strong ball winners with Clancee Pearce racking up 35 possessions, Ed Langdon 30, Brad Walsh 26, Darcy Tucker 21, and Rory O'Brien 20 to go with nine tackles despite being tightly tagged by Dean Munns.
Then at Lathlain Park in the battle of teams at the foot of the WAFL ladder, Perth started strongly against Swan Districts and never relented cruising to its second win of the season to the tune of 41 points.
Perth's midfield had a field day with Clint Jones racking up 47 possessions, Julian Jacobs 36, Liam McKenna 32, Aidan Tropiano 29 and ruckman Angus Graham 18 to go with six marks, 44 hit outs and two goals.
Teenager Zac Fisher was another standout again for the Demons with 27 disposals and a goal.
The forward-line found some more avenues to goal with Sam Garstone kicking three goals, Kristian Cary two and Callum Walley two.
It was a tough afternoon again for Swan Districts who now remain alone on the bottom of the WAFL ladder with just the one win. The absence of Ricky Cary, Jake Nuich, Murray Newman, Aaron Elari, Kirk Ugle and Jarrad Blight proving too tough to cover.
Tony Notte stepped up to kick three goals and Nelson Ansey two with Freddie Clutterbuck collecting 31 possessions, Matt Riggio 31, Adam Faulkner 29, Graham Jetta 21 and Jesse Turner 21.
