Round 6 McDonald's WAFL ResultsSaturday, April 23, 2016 - 11:57 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle prevailed in a cracking Anzac Derby clash against East Fremantle to remain undefeated in Round 6 of the WAFL on Saturday with Peel Thunder, West Perth and East Perth recording strong victories.

The Anzac Round of the 2016 McDonald's WAFL Premiership Season all took place on Saturday afternoon staring with Peel Thunder defeating Claremont 11.17 (83) to 8.14 (62), West Perth beating Swan Districts 13.14 (92) to 10.9 (69) and East Perth downing Perth 17.9 (111) to 10.7 (67).

Then at ATOM Stadium in the Anzac Derby, East Fremantle hit the front with a stirring run of three quick late goals with time expiring. But Haiden Schloithe then put South Fremantle back in front and the Bulldogs prevailed 13.16 (94) to 13.9 (87).

Claremont had to play its home match against Peel at Leederville's Medibank Stadium and the Tigers were doing well sticking with the Thunder for three quarters.

Peel led by just the six points at quarter-time, by one at half-time and by two at the last change. But the Thunder kicked away of Claremont with four to one in the last term to win by 21 points and improve to a 3-2 record on the season.

The Tigers slipped to 2-3 and it continued a trend of them struggling in final quarters not only last season but dating back to 2015 as well.

There were plenty of changes at Peel following the shake up with Fremantle in the AFL, but it was a usual source leading the way in the form of Rory O'Brien who finished with 35 possessions and two goals.

Josh Deluca was Peel's only other multiple goal scorer with two while Matt de Boer racked up 36 disposals, Ed Langdon 29, Connor Blakely 29, Ethan Hughes 23, Tanner Smith 22 (12 marks), Tendai Mzungu 22 and Brad Walsh 19.

Darcy Cameron provided a strong option in attack for Claremont kicking four goals with Haydn Busher and Ian Richardson adding two apiece.

Jye Bolton picked up 24 possessions for the Tigers, Ryan Neates 23, Ryan Lim 22, Jake Murphy 20, Tom Ledger 19, Ian Richardson 18, Matthew Davies 18, Oliver Tate 18 and Anton Hamp 18.

East Perth made it three wins on the trot after starting 2016 with three losses with the Royals holding Perth goalless in the opening quarter while kicking three goals themselves. It was the second straight week the Demons hadn’t kicked a first quarter goal.

East Perth only led by two points by half-time after a spirited Perth fight back, but the Royals proved too strong after half-time with 13 goals to six to record the 44-point victory.

In the absence of Paul Johnson and Fraser McInnes, East Perth had others step up with Jonathan Giles finishing with 17 disposals, 33 hit outs and a goal with Tom Lamb booting five goals from nine kicks and eight marks.

Matthew Allen, Patrick McGinnity and Luke Partington all kicked two goals each for the Royals.

Steven Payne celebrated his 100th game for East Perth with 22 possessions while Corey Adamson also gathered 26 disposals, Mark Hutchings 23, Partington 19 and McGinnity 19.

Swan Districts and West Perth did battle in their now annual Anzac Round clash both desperate for their second win of the season.

The Falcons missed plenty of chances in the opening quarter including the first four behinds of the game and that helped Swans to a one-point quarter-time lead.

Michael Lourey kicked West Perth's opening three goals and the Falcons looked on top when Joel Leeson booted his second late in the opening half. But Swans stayed in touch with Tony Notte's second to cut their half-time deficit to 14 points.

But West Perth held Swan Districts goalless in the third term while kicking three goals themselves and that was enough to set up the eventual 23-point victory as the Falcons improve to 2-4, and Swans slip to 1-5.

Lourey and Leeson kicked three goals each for West Perth while Aaron Black continued his outstanding form with 31 possessions, nine marks, six tackles and his ninth goal of 2016.

Shane Nelson made his return from a hand injury and sure made an impact with 29 disposals with Trent Manzone also picking up 24 touches, Drew Rohde 21, Luke Meadows 20, Steve Potente 19 and Steven Browne 19.

With Chris Keunen still out injured and Seva Mozhaev dropped to the reserves, Tyler Keitel carried the ruck for West Perth and finished with 22 disposals, 16 hit outs and a goal.

Tony Notte kicked three goals for Swan Districts and Alex Howard two while Matt Riggio compiled 35 possessions, Freddie Clutterbuck 28, Justin Simpson 25, Albert Dean 24, Adam Faulkner 23, Jacob Coniglio 20 and Griffen Logue 19.

Tom Smirk continued his good form as a defensive forward limiting Andrew Strijk to 14 possessions, and having 15 touches and a goal himself.

Then finally at ATOM Stadium in the Anzac Derby, South Fremantle again started well keeping its opponent goalless in the opening quarter for a second straight week.

The Bulldogs did kick the game's first three goals but they were wasteful in front of goal and that trend continued the rest of the afternoon to keep East Fremantle within striking distance.

Matthew Watson kicked East Fremantle's first goal at the four-minute mark of the second quarter and it was game on by half-time with South Fremantle's lead cut to three points when the Sharks kicked the last three goals of the opening half.

East Fremantle then hit the front to begin the second half with a snap to Sean Henson. South Fremantle regained the lead courtesy of Blaine Johnson and then in time-on quick goals to Ben Saunders and Steven Verrier steadied the Bulldogs to a 13-point lead.

By the time Saunders kicked his third at the 15-minute mark of the last term, South Fremantle led by 15 points but missed chances continued to have East Fremantle within striking distance.

Two quick goals to Brett Peake suddenly had the Sharks just two points behind at the 23-minute mark and then with 26 minutes on the clock, Jack Perham kicked truly to give East Fremantle a four-point advantage.

But the Bulldogs weren’t done with yet and Haiden Schloithe kicked truly from a set shot with 29 minutes gone. And then Ryan Cook goaled as the siren sounded with South Fremantle winning by seven points.

It is South Fremantle's fifth straight win to start the season ahead of a clash with the also undefeated Subiaco next Saturday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval. The Bulldogs have now also won seven straight against the Sharks at ATOM Stadium.

Saunders finished with three goals for South Fremantle while Schloithe, Steven Verrier and Johnson booted two apiece.

Ashton Hams racked up 32 possessions, Blayne Wilson 25, Tim Kelly 18, Matthew Gundry 17, Adam Guglielmana 17, Steven Verrier 17, Marlion Pickett 16 and Shane Hockey 16.

Watson delivered the best game of his five-match WAFL career with five goals from 14 disposals and eight strong marks. Peake also kicked three goals and Josh Simpson two.

Simpson put together his best game of the season on return to East Fremantle as well finishing with 25 possessions and six marks, including a spectacular one above the pack leading to a goal just before half-time.

Jesse Crichton had his best game of the season as well for the Sharks with 27 disposals while Matthew Jupp did well in defence holding Mason Shaw to one goal and captain Jamie McNamara had a good battle with Schloithe across half-back.

Brock O'Brien did provide some good drive with 17 possessions and nine marks while George Hampson was lively up forward but only kicked 1.3 and had several other shots that failed to score.
