High hopes for young Indigenous female footballersThursday, March 31, 2016 - 2:25 PM

More than 200 Aboriginal girls aged 13-17 years are expected to participate in this year’s Kirby Bentley Cup to be held at Lightning Park in Noranda on Friday April 1.

The round robin football event provides all Indigenous females the opportunity to showcase their talent and be selected for the WA Female Kickstart team.

The Cup is named after AFL (Melbourne FC) and Swan Districts footballer Kirby Bentley, who is pushing the pathway for young talented Indigenous girls.

“The Kirby Bentley Cup is a great new beginning for Indigenous females looking to grow within the sport,” Ms Bentley said.

“It is about encouraging players to be fit and healthy and to be involved in something where they make life-long friendships along the way.”

The Cup is heading into it’s third year after it proved to be a great success last year, attracting a total 16 teams and around 200 participants representing both metropolitan and regional WA.

“Since the Cup started in 2014, team numbers have jumped from 10 to 16,” Ms Bentley said.

“At the end of the day it’s not about me, it’s about the girls being involved in Australia’s great game and helping spread the word.”

“Ideally I’d love to see these young girls push themselves, realise their potential and play for a club.”

Kirby Bentley said the tournament is a fantastic way for family and friends to support and grow the female football pathway.

“I am humbled, honoured and proud to have so many girls wanting to participate and dominate in a game that has created so many life opportunities for me,” Ms Bentley said.

“I want to see nothing more than for our young girls to be successful and inspire their sisters, cousins and nieces.”

The Cup will be held from 4pm to 8pm at Lightning Park in Noranda on Friday April 1.
