WAFL Preliminary Final match reportSunday, September 17, 2017 - 5:31 PM - by Chris Pike

SUBIACO has advanced to a fourth successive WAFL Grand Final and set up a rematch with Peel Thunder after beating South Fremantle by 32 points in the preliminary final at Leederville Oval on Sunday.

South Fremantle stormed out of the blocks in the preliminary final on Sunday with the opening three goals of the game in a stirring opening in the first 11 minutes.

But Subiaco worked its way on top from there kicking eight of the next 10 goals to go into half-time with a 22-point advantage.

The Lions lead grew to 34 points early in both the third and fourth quarters, but the Bulldogs didn’t give up and kicking three consecutive goals in the final term in the space of seven minutes to make a real game of it again closing to within 16 points.

However, Subiaco responded with goals to Max Walters and Ben Sokol to come away with the 14.14 (98) to 10.6 (66).

The win sees the Lions advance to a fourth successive WAFL Grand Final as they attempt to make it three premierships in those four years up against Peel Thunder next Sunday at Domain Stadium.

Meanwhile, it's two straight preliminary final losses for South Fremantle after the Bulldogs ended both the last two seasons in second position on the ladder.

Liam Baker and Brad Stevenson kicked three goals apiece for Subiaco with Liam Ryan brilliant booting two from 20 possessions. Lachlan Delahunty had 23 touches and 24 hit outs mostly in the ruck.

Cory Dell'Olio kicked three goals for South Fremantle and Haiden Schloithe had 27 possessions, and Marlion Pickett 25 to go with 12 marks.

Preliminary final day began at Leederville Oval with the colts contest with Claremont defeating East Perth 8.9 (57) to 6.9 (45).

That sees the Tigers into a fifth successive colts Grand Final as they attempt to win a third straight premiership.

Standing in the way is East Fremantle in next Sunday's WAFL colts Grand Final at Domain Stadium.

Then in the reserves, Subiaco won its way into the Grand Final beating Claremont for the second time in three weeks, this time prevailing at Leederville Oval 10.11 (71) to 6.14 (50).

Dual premiership and fairest and best winning 150-gamemidfielder Chris Phelan returned strongly from a knee injury to have 22 possessions with Dylan Nelson and Ray Daniels kicking three goals each as Subiaco won by 21 points.

That sets up the reserves Grand Final next Sunday at Domain Stadium between South Fremantle and Subiaco.
