THERE are just the two matches in Round 15 of the WAFL but both matches feature four of the teams trying to keep their seasons alive in the race for fifth position. The top four spots at the of Round 14 do appear relatively locked away with Subiaco three games and percentage clear in first position while Claremont is a further game and percentage in front of both South Fremantle and Perth who sit on 8-5 records. ROUND 14 in the Simply Energy WAFL Colts saw Peel Thunder maintain its gap on top of the ladder with a one-point win over East Perth while Claremont continued its strong recent form and there were wins also for East Fremantle and Perth. ROUND 14 of the 2019 Optus WAFL Premiership Season always promised to be season-defining and it proved the case with Subiaco all but securing top spot, Perth going a long way to securing a finals berth and the West Coast Eagles storming into fifth position. Round 14 in the WAFL got underway on Saturday afternoon starting with East Fremantle keeping its slim finals hopes alive and ending a three-game losing run to beat Swan Districts 8.11 (59) to 3.12 (30) at East Fremantle's New Choice Homes Park. The other Saturday afternoon clash saw East Perth also stay in the finals hunt with a 9.10 (64) to 6.9 (45) victory against Peel Thunder at Leederville Oval to give them consecutive wins. THE merry go round in fifth position on the WAFL ladder continues with the West Coast Eagles improving to that spot after a fourth straight win while Subiaco went a long way to securing another minor premiership and Perth won a heartstopper to move closer to a first finals berth in 22 years. It always shaped as though it would be a season-defining Round 14 of the 2019 Optus WAFL Premiership Season with the matches spread across Saturday afternoon, Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, and that's exactly how it panned out. REACHING 100 games for South Fremantle means the world to one of the WAFL's most versatile players, but what Steve Verrier wants more than anything is to try and replicate his colts success at league level with the Bulldogs. Prior to being drafted to Richmond, Verrier was a colts premiership player at South Fremantle in 2011 and now after three years of reaching preliminary finals, that's all that is on his mind even when a significant individual milestone comes up. Having grown up dreaming of playing with South Fremantle, reaching 100 games with the Bulldogs is a massive accomplishment for Verrier who despite dealing with injuries in recent years, has proven himself one of the most effective utility players in the competition. THINGS are getting decidedly interesting in the Optus WAFL Women's competition with wins for Swan Districts and East Fremantle in Round 9 on Saturday meaning that the top four teams are only separated by one match. Subiaco had looked like a runaway leader in this inaugural WAFLW season, but with their loss to Swan Districts on Saturday all of a sudden things are remarkably tight following nine rounds of the campaign. Both Round 9 WAFLW matches on Saturday were played to celebrate NAIDOC Week as well, paying tribute to Aboriginal culture and the Indigenous contribution to the game. THE 2019 WAFL Colts competition is taking shape in fascinating fashion with Peel Thunder remaining clear in top spot but then West Perth, Swan Districts, East Perth and Claremont jostling for spots, and reigning premiers Subiaco breathing down the necks. The first colts contest of the round took place at Claremont Oval and it was Claremont who kept themselves comfortably in fifth position by defeating the bottom place South Fremantle 13.10 (88) to 5.4 (34). NAIDOC Round in the WAFL on Saturday not only saw the competition pay tribute to the contribution of the Aboriginal culture, but also saw five fascinating match ups with Subiaco and Claremont surging ahead while West Perth, West Coast Eagles and East Perth won important games. All five matches took on greater significance as the race for the finals heats up in the WAFL in Round 13 action and there were a host of standout individual performances to go along with the big results from a team perspective.
