Round 10 Colts WrapWednesday, June 19, 2019 - 7:48 AM - by Chris Pike

THERE were just the two games in the Simply Energy WAFL Colts in Round 10 of the 2019 season and that saw Claremont hand Swan Districts its first loss of the season and Peel Thunder make things interesting in the race for top spot.

With the West Australian State 18s team currently in action, it's always a fascinating time in the colts competition any season with the chance for other players to step up in the absence of some stars who are shining on the national stage.

There were just the two matches that took place in Round 10 of the 2019 season and that started with the lone clash on Saturday at Mandurah's David Grays Arena. That saw Peel Thunder continue its impressive form running out 15.8 (98) to 7.8 (50) victors against South Fremantle.

The second game of the round took place on Sunday at Bassendean's Steel Blue Oval and that saw Swan Districts suffer its first loss of the colts season for 2019 at the hands of Claremont. The Tigers ran out thrilling 5.11 (41) to 5.8 (38) victors over the black-and-whites.

Following 10 rounds of the 2019 season in the colts, Swan Districts and Peel Thunder both hold 7-1 records with Swans only holding onto top spot courtesy of a 10 per cent advantage over the Thunder.

West Perth (5-3) remains in third position with Claremont (4-3) and East Perth (4-4) rounding out the top five.

Perth (3-5) is just outside the top five in front of South Fremantle (2-6), East Fremantle (2-7) and Subiaco (2-6).

ROUND 10 SIMPLY ENERGY COLTS

PEEL THUNDER 15.8 (98) defeated SOUTH FREMANTLE 7.8 (50)

Peel hosted South Fremantle at Mandurah's David Grays Arena on Saturday in the only colts contest of the day with the Thunder continuing their impressive form beating the Bulldogs by 48 points.

Peel came into the Round 10 contest on home turf having lost just one game so far this season which did come at the expense of Claremont back in Round 6.

Since then, the Thunder have beaten West Perth by two points and Subiaco by 25 points heading into the Round 9 bye and then the clash with the Bulldogs on Saturday.

South Fremantle came into the game with two wins from its opening seven matches but they had some momentum following a 17-point win on WA Day against East Fremantle prior to the Round 9 bye.

Peel came out flying from the start and delivered a huge first quarter which would set the tone for the rest of the game. The Thunder kicked six goals to one in the opening quarter to head into the quarter-time break leading by five goals.

South Fremantle did take advantage of the breeze in the second quarter to manage three goals to one, but Peel still held a commanding 22-point advantage at the major break.

With the help of having the breeze at their back in the last quarter, Peel put its foot down in the third term piling on six goals to just one from South Fremantle to open up a 50-point lead by three quarter-time.

It was two goals apiece in the last quarter as Peel ended up winning 15.8 (98) to 7.8 (50).

Ben Middleton, Isiah Winder, Tyler Nesbitt and Connor Heuer kicked two goals apiece for the Thunder.

Jack Sears racked up 28 possessions for Peel, Winder 27, Zac Rankin 22, James Ewing 21, Brad Oldfield 20, David Yaccob 20 and Kilian Rawson 17.

Ira Jetta kicked two of South Fremantle's seven goals for the game to go with 18 possessions and 10 tackles.

Jaxon Bellchambers also collected 16 disposals for the Bulldogs, Toby McQuilkin 14, Jarrod Salmeri 14, George Wessels 14, Eric Botha 14 and Jacob Sax 14.

Nash Miller produced 12 possessions, 31 hit outs, six marks and a goal as well in the ruck.

SWAN DISTRICTS 5.8 (38) lost to CLAREMONT 5.11 (41)

The second colts contest of Round 10 took place on Sunday morning at Steel Blue Oval and it was a thrilling contest between two teams who are perennially among the best teams in the competition and best producers of talents to be drafted.

Coming off playing in last year's Grand Final in the colts, Swan Districts came into Sunday's clash on home turf undefeated from the opening seven matches of the 2019 season while Claremont's form  had been building nicely after a slow start.

The Tigers lost to East Fremantle and West Perth to open their season but they had won four of their previous six matches leading into Sunday's clash with a Swans team that had gone through undefeated and as the standout team so far in 2019.

With both teams coming off the Round 9 bye and missing some key players to the WA State 18s team, it was going to always be a fascinating contest and that's how it played out.

Swan Districts kicked the only goal of the first quarter and then with both teams managing two goals in the second term, it was the black-and-whites leading by three points going into the half-time break.

But Claremont managed to kick three goals in the third quarter and Swan Districts just the two to see the Tigers assume the lead and take a four-point advantage into the final break.

Neither team could then manage a goal in the last quarter with Claremont holding on for the 5.11 (41) to 5.8 (38) victory to hand Swan Districts their first defeat of the colts season.

Isaiah Butters kicked two goals for Claremont with Charlie Malone, Hayden Parker and Kade Lines managing one apiece.

Jye Clark collected 28 possessions for the Tigers, Joel Western 25, Jack Cooley 23, Tom Baldwin 17 and Lachlan Davis 17 while Callum Jamieson dominated in the ruck with 18 disposals, 39 hit outs, eight tackles and seven marks.

Jehb O'Donohue kicked two goals for Swan Districts while Kade Wallrodt, Ben Taylor and Jamison Ugle kicked one each.

Ethan Nordahl racked up 29 possessions for the black-and-whites, Brenton Hilton 28, Wallrodt 23, Ashley Brockbernd 18 (11 tackles), Atem Deng 18, Seb Bright 16 and Kade Screaigh 14 (10 tackles).
