WA players impress in AFLW DraftWednesday, October 18, 2017 - 11:24 AM

A total of nine West Australian players were selected in the 2017 NAB AFL Women's Draft, including two top 10 selections.

They included Swan Districts Women Football Club's Stephanie Cain who was redrafted by the Fremantle Dockers with the second pick, after being delisted at the end of last season.

Evangeline Gooch from East Fremantle Women's Football Club was selected by the Fremantle Dockers with the tenth pick and Coastal Titans Women’s Football Club player Jodie White, winner of the Mundella WA Women’s Football League’s 2017 Dhara Kerr Fairest and Best, joins Gooch at Fremantle after being chosen at number 18.

This was in addition to the five West Australians selected in the Rookie Draft and the signing of free agent Perth Angels Women's Football Club's Rachel Ashley, taking the total number of WA players listed in the AFLW to 15.

WAFC Talent Manager - Female Programs Clint Degebrodt congratulated all of the WA players selected.

"Congratulations and best wishes to all our players who have received the opportunity to fulfill their AFLW dream and everyone else involved in the Female Football talent pathway,” Degebrodt said.

“It is a great result for the State, the Mundella WAWFL and its Clubs, as well as the WA State Academy and all players are highly deserving of this exciting opportunity as a reward for all of their hard work and commitment.

"The WAFC is committed to ensuring that WA continues to be an industry leader in developing female talent and is constantly looking at ways to innovate and ensure that players receive every opportunity to compete at the highest level."
