WAFL Round 17 match reportsSaturday, July 15, 2017 - 11:37 PM - by Chris Pike

SUBIACO won a 14th straight match, Peel Thunder made it five in-a-row and South Fremantle four in succession in Saturday's Round 17 WAFL action while East Fremantle also scored its second victory of 2017.

The Round 17 action got underway in the first regional fixture of 2017 as part of the Department of Sport and Recreation's Country Sport Enrichment Scheme with Subiaco taking on Claremont at Ports Oval in Esperance.

The Lions proved too strong beating the Tigers 14.10 (94) to 7.12 (54) to make it 14 consecutive victories while Claremont missed a chance to move into the top five.

South Fremantle once again started slowly falling 41 points behind Swan Districts by midway through the second quarter at Fremantle Community Bank Oval in a battle between two teams on three-match winning streaks.

But from that point on the Bulldogs kicked 14 of the last 15 goals of the game to end up winning 15.13 (103) to 9.9 (63).

The two AFL partnered clubs then set the stage for Sunday's Western Derby at Domain Stadium with Peel Thunder winning a fifth straight match to consolidate third position further.

The reigning premiers defeated East Perth 12.7 (79) to 7.9 (51) at Leederville Oval with the Royals also missing the chance to take fifth position from West Perth.

The bottom two teams also locked horns at East Fremantle Oval with East Fremantle proving too strong for Perth getting its second win of 2017, beating Perth 11.7 (73) to 8.9 (57) to celebrate the 100th game of Jayden Schofield.
