WAFL Round 14 match reportsSunday, June 25, 2017 - 7:45 PM - by Chris Pike

THERE were three big WAFL matches in Round 14 on Saturday afternoon with Peel Thunder, Swan Districts and Claremont all winning to improve their positions in the finals race before South Fremantle came from behind to thrash Perth on Sunday.

With seven teams still alive in the race for spots in the top five and with Subiaco well clear on top and South Fremantle looking steady in second, that leaves five teams right now looking to be battling over three of those positions.

Three of those scored impressive wins on Saturday with Peel, Swan Districts and Claremont improving its finals hopes, while those of West Perth and East Perth took a hit with losses.

Claremont won its third straight match at its redeveloped home of Claremont Oval holding on to win a thriller over West Perth 14.6 (90) to 12.16 (88).

It was another thrilling finish between the two clubs with West Perth kicking the only two goals of the final quarter to get within a goal. The Falcons then had four attempts on goal that all missed before Corey Chalmers won a holding the ball free-kick as the siren sounded.

It was a difficult shot from the boundary and almost 50m out. To add to the difficulty the only small muddy patch on the ground was where he was kicking from. Chalmers' shot missed to the near side and Claremont held on for the two-point win.

Claremont remains outside the top five at 6-6 but only a game behind the three teams above, and with a better percentage than two of them. West Perth slips to fifth at 7-5 and with the worst percentage besides the bottom two teams.

Swan Districts and East Perth were doing battle over a spot in the top five at Steel Blue Oval, and despite the Royals coming into the contest with better recent form, Swans dominated from the outset.

Swan Districts went on to win 14.6 (90) to 9.10 (64) to improve to fourth position at 7-5. East Perth remains seventh at 5-7 to now be two games out of the five.

Reigning premiers Peel Thunder scored an important win over East Fremantle, prevailing 9.12 (66) to 3.12 (30) at East Fremantle Oval.

The win improves Peel to third position with a 7-5 record while East Fremantle remains last at 1-11.

The round concluded on Sunday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with South Fremantle bouncing back from an early 29-point deficit to kick 22 of the last 23 goals to beat Perth 25.13 (163) to 7.11 (53).
